A quick catch up with mathematician Dr. Glen Van Brummelen. Quest's Administrative Assistant and familiar friendly face at our reception desk recalls a fond memory. A couple monthly must-haves. A seasonal Tutor Tip from our Interim CAO.

And more!
Dr. Glen Van Brummelen
Quest Mathematics Tutor

He has taught mathematics at liberal arts colleges his entire career and is the recipient of the Haimo award, the top teaching award for undergraduate math in North America.

Glen is currently at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, where Albert Einstein worked!

If you've got 52 minutes, enjoy the whole thing. Just a few minutes to spare? Catch what you can of Glen's presentation: "The Story of Trigonometry: Revolutions in the Heavens, and on the Earth."
Monthly Must-Haves
with Mollie Holm, Quest Communications & Marketing Office
A green plant for your desk. It's nice to take care of a living thing and it spruces up your workspace.

If you're a forgetful caregiver or an over-waterer (don't worry, it happens), I recommend a cactus.
I find it helpful to listen to an interesting podcast or an upbeat playlist for a mood boost when the dark winter weather kicks in.

Bonus: a gardening podcast with survival tips for that plant on your desk!

Tutor Tip from Dr. Jamie Kemp
Interim Chief Academic Officer
Arts and Humanities Tutor (Art History and Visual Studies)

Jamie's tips for enjoying a trip to an art gallery or museum:
  • Do some research before you go. The experience will be richer if you know something about the collection, its history, and its highlights.
  • Pick 3 or 4 items that you really want to see and focus on those. Don’t try to absorb everything!
  • Slow down and take your time when looking at the objects on display. Scholars estimate that people spend an average of 15-30 seconds looking at a work of art in a museum, but that’s not enough time to notice the details or process what you're seeing.
  • Take a notebook and sketch what you see. It doesn’t matter if you are any good at drawing—it's a great way to hone your observation skills.

You answer me, but I never ask you a question. What am I?

Quest Quotable
Take 5 with Deidre "Dee" Plaatjes
Administrative Assistant & Quest Reception

1.How long have you been at Quest?
11 years! It feels like only yesterday that I first started, except there were only 73 students on campus back then. And I knew almost every student's name. Fast forward to today, it’s a little harder to remember everyone’s name, but I still try.

2.If Hollywood made a movie about your life, who would play you as the lead role?
Oprah Winfrey. She's always been an inspiration for me!

3.What’s your favourite holiday and why?
Christmas! I love to enjoy this holiday just hanging out with my children, their spouses, my five grandchildren, my mother, my sister and nieces.

4.Android or iPhone?
Android. My kids want me to get an iPhone because they both have them, but I think I’ll stick with what I have. I still don’t know everything about the phone I have now, which I’ve had for over four years, so it will probably take me forever to learn how to use a new one!

5.Tell us about a memorable Quest moment.
During winter break 2010, a lot of students, staff and faculty were going to be off campus for quite some time. I sent an email to everyone saying I would like to live vicariously through them as they're off traveling the world. I asked them to mail a postcard from wherever they were and to tell me what they're up to.

And they did! Every time I received a postcard, I pinned it on a world map I had set up at reception. I received so many postcards that the map was fully covered. And then all the walls behind me were covered too!

Over the years, once in awhile, I'll still receive a postcard!
