Hurricane Ian Impact
Polk County missed the catastrophic destruction Hurricane Ian caused our neighbors to the south. Yet, the size of the storm did mean high winds and flooding rain reach our homes and communities. We acknowledge there are still many within Polk County who may be without power or have some major repairs to complete in the coming weeks.

Let us do what Democrats do best and support our neighbors in need. In addition to doing welfare checks with friends and neighbors, clubs and caucuses should also do a roll call of members to make sure everyone is okay. Beyond that, we have found some organized efforts to help those impacted by Hurricane Ian. Please assist as you can.

  • The First United Methodist Church of Lakeland is collecting non-perishable foods, items and cleaning supplies for those in south Polk County. They also need volunteers to help at the distribution coordination site until at least Oct 10. For more information and to sign up for a shift, click here.
  • Polk County is asking for volunteers to assist with disaster recovery. Click here to fill out a Disaster Volunteer Application.
  • If you wish to donate to those who were affected by Hurricane Ian, cash is best; it helps the community recover faster. For more information on cash donations go to www.uwcf.org and follow the links or go to www.Givecf.org/donate and drop down to United Community Relief fund.
If you have been impacted by the storm and need additional help, please do not hesitate to contact us. We will do our utmost to find assistance.
Meet & Greet Cancelled
Due to the widespread destruction caused by Hurricane Ian, the Polk County DEC has decided to cancel the candidate meet and greet scheduled for Thursday. We will consider holding another event later in the month.
Celebration of Life for John Roy McArthur

We were saddened to hear of the death of John Roy McArthur, who was a long-time member of the Polk County Democratic Executive Commitee.

As John's family fondly remembered in his full obituary: "He followed political news closely and was very proud to have left the Republican Party to become a Democrat in 1980. For years, he had a homemade sign in his study that said, 'I think, therefore I can’t listen to Rush Limbaugh.' "

Aged 85, John died September 25, 2022, following a diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease and a fall resulting in surgery. A celebration of life service will be held on Friday, October 7, 2022, at 10:00 am at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.

He is survived by his loving wife, Martha “Pete” Wesley and her children, Wayne, Bob, and Karen; three adult granddaughters; four great-grandsons; and one great-grand daughter. He secretly enjoyed being a great-grandfather. He is preceded in death by his parents and younger brother, Tom McArthur.

John was born in Lakeland, Florida on November 14, 1936. (He always said, “That’s nine months after Valentine’s Day.”) His parents were Martha and T.O. McArthur. After graduating from high school, he attended the University of Florida, leaving to serve in the Army for 2 ½ years. Upon his return, he completed his degree at University of South Florida and entered Stetson Law School in St. Petersburg. He practiced law in Bartow and Lakeland.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the following organizations: St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 1820 E. County Road 540A, Lakeland, FL 33813; P.E.A.C.E. Ministry, P.O. Box 1928, Lakeland, FL 33802; and Polk County Democrats, 6039 Cypress Gardens, Boulevard, Suite 328, Winter Haven, FL 33884. Or, to honor John’s memory, be sure to do your research and vote in all elections (especially local ones).

Condolences may be sent to the family at www.heathfuneralchapel.com.

Are you ready to vote?
Hurricane Ian may have suspended our normal routines, but the midterms are still coming and we need to do our best to Defeat DeSantis Nov 8.
While mail was suspended in parts of Polk County last week, vote by mail (VBM) ballots should be dropping and voting commencing now!
We recommend those ballots be filled out and returned to the Polk County Supervisor of Elections as soon as possible, to prevent delay.
  • The deadline to request a vote-by-mail (VBM) ballot is October 29.
  • All VBM ballots must be received by 7 pm Nov 8, Election Day.
  • Early voting polls will be open 9 am to 6 pm, Oct 25-Nov 5.
  • If someone you know is eligible to vote but has not registered, they have until October 11 to do so.
For more information about voting in Polk County, visit the Polk County Supervisor of Elections website: polkelections.com

Help Get Out The Vote
With BlueShift FL staff and voters coping with storm cleanup efforts last week, all voter contact activities were cancelled. Therefore, we lost a week of momentum.

Therefore, it will be imperative for volunteers who can to help Polk County field organizers 'chase votes' - that is reminding voters to turn in their VBM ballots, vote early and vote on the day. If you have just 1-2 hours in the coming weeks to door knock or make phones calls to registered Democrats and left-leaning no-party affiliated voters, please sign up to volunteer!

Remember, we only have 5 more weeks before the election!
