Polk County Democratic Party Weekly Digest: Nov 14-20, 2022

Gains made amid the losses
Some are saying the national results by the Democratic Party are making 'quiet history', as voters defied the 'Red Wave' rhetoric and kept the Senate, as well as weakened the GOP in many state races and on their core issues.

It is no secret that Florida did not share in this historic shift for midterm results. However, we should celebrate the wins we did secure amid a strong statewide Republican turnout. A turnout that saw votes go in support of at least two Polk County ballot items Democrats favored.

The first was passage of the Polk County Environmental Lands Acquisition and Management Referendum. Some worried that in these times of high inflation, and deep partisan politics, this initiative would not survive that ballot box. However, it is evident some Republicans and NPAs voted in favor of this measure, which will protect protect and restore our local water resources, environmental lands and important fish and wildlife habitat for future generations. This is an issue that apparently is important to a majority of Polk County residents.
The second reason we should celebrate was the re-election of Lisa Miller to the Polk County School Board, during the run-off election. This was a non-partisan race that took a hard partisan turn, after the GOP endorsed and backed the hard-right County Citizens Defending Freedom (CCDF) organization's candidates. Lisa, who believed the race should remain non-partisan, did not seek our endorsement. She did allow us to recommend her to voters. We added her name to our voter guide recommendations and assisted in distributing her campaign material.

And, while not a local win, we should all celebrate with Democrats across the nation who helped secure the Senate. We remain hopeful there may be a similar victory in Congress. If not, we should still remain excited that the margin would be much less than expected, giving strength to our belief that more Americans support Democratic values than the Republicans would care to admit.

To help secure a truly successful Midterm for Democrats, consider supporting efforts in Georgia to re-elect Senator Raphael Warnock.

Call to Action:
Ask Voters in Georgia to support Rev. Warnock for Senate

Starting Sunday, Nov 20, Swing Left will host weekly phonebanking opportunities for volunteers to call voters in Georgia to get out and support Rev. Warnock for Senate. You can do this from the comfort of your home, with a phone and a laptop, tablet or computer.

To sign up and for more information, click here.
We must also remember ALL the good work our many volunteers contributed towards building a foundation that will help the Polk County Democratic Party grow stronger.

Firstly, our presence grew. From working tables at candidate forums or festivals, volunteers heard from many Polk County residents who said they appreciated us showing up, because they did not know there were active Democrats in the county!

Secondly, our county party and local caucuses and clubs grew. New memberships are being reported by a number of our party-related organizations. We also have a host of new volunteers who signed up with the DEC.

Thank you to everyone who worked hard to remind voters, and others, we are here and we are fighting the good fight.

To be successful in 2024, we need to keep those relationships thriving and growing. Stay engaged!
