More than 250 supporters of women's rights attended the Lakeland 'Bans Off Our Bodies' rally on Saturday, one of nearly 400 held nationally. State Rep. Anna Eskamani (D-Orange County) was among the speakers in attendance at the local rally.
The rallies brought hundreds of thousands of Americans to the streets to protest the potential overturning of Roe v Wade, which provides women with the constitutional right to abortion. The fear of the landmark ruling being overturned - and triggering an end to abortion access in at least 25 states - stems from a leaked draft opinion of the Supreme Court.
In response to these developments, the Polk County Democratic Party last week adopted a resolution calling on the US Senate to end its filibuster and pass SB 1976, also known as the Women's Heath Protection Act. The Senate failed to pass the bill last week, which would have codified abortion protections, as well as taking any action to abolish the filibuster.

To vote in the Democratic primaries, you must be a registered Democrat. If you are not registered with the party, you have until July 25 to update your voter status.
Meanwhile, if you vote by mail you may need to Update your Signature. Signature change overtime and, for this reason, this has been one area conservatives have assembled teams to scrutinize mail-in ballots to try to discredit votes. Protect your vote and make sure your signature is updated.
Reminder: August 23 is also the same daycounty school board elections are held. However, these are nonpartisan elections and ALL eligible voters can cast a ballot for candidates within all school districts.
