Polk County Democratic Party Weekly Digest: June 6-12, 2022

Pride month each June historically has been a way for the LGBTQ community to celebrate ever increasing freedoms to be themselves. Unfortunately, the freedoms gained appear under threat in states like Florida, where legislators this year passed the 'Don't Say Gay' bill and Governor DeSantis appears ready to target transitioning youth treatments

In these times, the LGBTQ community and supporters need to stand strong and unite to fight these threats to LGBTQ freedoms and pride.

After a two-year hiatus, due to COVID pandemic restrictions, Polk Pride will resume a week of Pride events on Saturday, June 11, culminating with Pride the Park on June 18. A number of Polk Democratic Party clubs and caucuses will be attending Polk in the Park and need volunteers. Or, to show your solidarity, attend one of the many events scheduled for the week.
June 19th or “Juneteenth” is a very important day in African American history. Juneteenth, or “Freedom Day” is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Support local Black leaders and communities by attending an event in your local community, as listed below.

Let's Make That Vote Count

Over the next few months we will continue to emphasize the importance of the primaries and school board elections on August 23. There is a phrase: "All politics is local". It is imperative we turn up to vote - Democrats and our left-leaning no party affiliated contacts - during an election that normally sees low-voter turnout. It is important to build a local community that reflects our values to send a message to our Congressional leaders to represent our interests, which reflect the interests of a majority of the American population.

Take action now

The school board election is nonpartisan, but the Polk County Democratic Party is encouraging support for candidates challenging the alt-right CCDF candidates. We believe the candidates below will work in the true interest of all Polk County students, their parents, and school district staff.

Get involved with the campaigns of Sarah Fortney, Sara Jones, Kay Fields, and Del Quary, in their respective district races. Have them speak at your club and caucuses. And remind every voter they can vote for all of them regardless of where they live in Polk County.

Reminder: To vote in the Democratic primaries, you must be a registered Democrat. The deadline to update your voter status is July 25.

If you vote by mail you may need to Update your Signature. Signature change overtime and, for this reason, this has been one area conservatives have assembled teams to scrutinize mail-in ballots to try to discredit votes. Protect your vote and make sure your signature is updated.

2022 PCPS Annual Community Survey Now Open

Polk County Public Schools is conducting an annual survey to learn how we can better serve our students, employees, their families and the entire community. A district committee created the Community Feedback Survey to measure public perception of the school district. Improving public perception is one of the goals of the school district’s current Strategic Plan.

Please take time to participate in the survey, by clicking here.
