Polk Democrats to take part in MLK Day events

Today marks Dr Martin Luther King Jr Day. To commemorate the day, a number of activities were held in Polk County this past weekend, and will continue through the week.

In Lakeland, the observance will culminate with the annual MLK Jr Day parade on Saturday, Jan 21, starting at 1 pm. Pat Jorgesen of the Lakeland Democratic Club is looking for volunteers to walk in the parade and help decorate the float, prior to the event. The parade will feature more than 100 participants presenting the theme "Our history is our future — protect and preserve it." Willie Horton, a retired Detriot Tigers baseball player, has been selected as the parade's grand marshal.

Seeking municipal candidates now!!

Do you live in Bartow, Auburndale, Davenport, Eagle Lake, Frostproof, Haines City, Hillcrest Heights, Lake Alfred, Lake Hamilton, Lake Wales, Mulberry, or Winter Haven? Are you happy with how your elected leaders are governing?

Did you know all these municipalities have at least one seat up for election in April? Have you ever considered representing your town and running for election? Or do you know of someone who would be a good candidate?

While municipal races are non-partisan, we know those who identify with a party likely bring their party politics to the municipal chambers. And many of those currently holding office are recognized Republicans who are agents of the more extreme right-wing politics putting our democracy at risk.

LWV Polk to have their first in-person meeting

League of Women Voters of Polk County is inviting all members and their guests to an in-person meeting on Sunday, Jan. 22, from 2-4 pm at Beacon Hills Fellowship in Lakeland.

Lisa Miller, Polk County School Board member, and Sarah Fortney, past school board member, will be featured speakers to discuss the topic: “CHALLENGES IN EDUCATION”.
