COME JOIN OUR NEW REVITALIZED POLK COUNTY YOUNG DEMOCRATS!!
Letter from the Chair of the Polk County Young Democrats

Hello fellow Polk Democrats,
My name is Edwin Melendez, Chair of the Young Democrats .  It's become clear that we live in unprecedented times and people are looking for answers to the revolving door of difficult questions.  As Chairperson I want to bring communities of all identity and thought together by becoming a bridge between people who disagree, starting a movement to speak truth to the power and authority that brings tangible results to the citizens of Polk County and participating in local projects to grow and beautify every town and city.  Some will oppose our movement from becoming a driving force in our communitites and institutions, but that only gives us more of a reason to continue to combat the problems facing Polk County residents and its students like poverty, price inflation, substance abuse, healthcare disparities, sexual abuse in educational facilities, environmental concerns, discrimination of marginalized groups and other concerns people have in the region.
Now, the choice comes to us: do we sit on our thumbs in the face of adversity and make incremental advancements, or do we use the power of a grassroots movement to influence the institutions to provide basic services and be held accountable to people-alike.  The mainstream media has let the people down by creating narratives that aren't inherently objective and failing to provide a full picture of current problems thus misinforming the public.  The Young Democrats must not only provide a safe space for open and honest discourse about evolving information but to use this driving force of enlightening thought to impact policy that dilutes power from the already powerful elite to the workers.  There is a focus on voter and union registration drives that will build an electorate that is diverse and politically active, communicating with all locals and listening to their concerns or suggestions, teaming up with domestic leaders like schools, environmental groups, rehabilitation centers, churches, etc. and assisting with the uplift of communities through programs and partnerships, raising awareness of social and economic legislative changes affecting Polk County residents.
A lot of work needs to be done, and that work is what I and the Young Democrats plan on tackling.

Please join me for our 1st Young Dems meeting on Tuesday, April 26, 2022 @ 7pm.  Please sign up below to attend.  Upon signing up, you will be sent the Zoom link & info to attend.  I look forward to meeting you all and beginning to #TurnPolkBlue.

Lisa Murkowski, Mitt Romney back Ketanji Brown Jackson, all but assure confirmation

Republican Sens. Lisa Murkowski and Mitt Romney say they will vote to confirm Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s historic elevation to the Supreme Court, giving President Joe Biden’s nominee a burst of bipartisan support and all but assuring she’ll become the first Black female Justice.

The senators from Alaska and Utah announced their decisions Monday night ahead of a procedural vote to advance the nomination and as Democrats pressed to confirm Jackson by the end of the week. GOP Sen. Susan Collins of Maine announced last week that she would back Jackson, noting her “stellar qualifications” as a federal Judge, public defender and member of the U.S. Sentencing Commission.

Redistricting update
State courts would lose all jurisdiction over congressional redistricting if a developing Republican legal strategy prevails. The courts could not overturn gerrymanders or adopt maps when a governor and legislature deadlock, as is happening in Florida. One party’s Legislature could all but banish the other from the state’s delegation.
