PRI prepares to mark the 10th anniversary of the UN Bangkok Rules

December 2020 marks the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Rules for the Treatment of Women Prisoners and Non-custodial Measures for Women Offenders (the Bangkok Rules). As we approach this milestone, PRI invites you to join a number of initiatives highlighting the need for full implementation of the Bangkok Rules:

  • A joint Call to Action, calling on governments to reduce women's imprisonment and protect the rights of women in detention. Sign up in Arabic, English, Spanish, French or Russian.
  • Online event (3 December 2020 at 2pm GMT). Hear from women with experience of detention, and advocates including former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and Anand Grover, Global Commission on Drug Policy and former UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Health. View the full programme and register.

PRI will also launch a blog series in December highlighting good practices and ongoing challenges implementing the Bangkok Rules across regions. If you would like to contribute to the blog series, contact Tríona Lenihan at tlenihan@penalreform.org. Follow the campaign and join the conversation online using #BangkokRules10.
