Women in prison trained in business skills receive startup capital in Uganda

On 13 June, 26 women from Mbale Women's Prison were certified in small business management. The women, who had completed one month's training in business development, entrepreneurship and strategic business planning, also received startup capital ranging from Shs3m to Shs7m, to launch their own business to support themselves and their families upon release.

At the ceremony, one of the beneficiaries said, "When I was arrested and convicted, I lost everything I had, including my job. I am now happy that upon my release, I will have the capital to start a small business for myself and I know I will make it.”
This support was provided as part of PRI's FATE project (From Access to Equality) funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

World Drug Day 2022

Marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on 26 June 2022, a group of UN human rights experts representing 12 UN Special Procedures called on the international community to bring an end to the so-called “war on drugs” and promote drug policies that are firmly anchored in human rights.

The statement notes the far-reaching negative implications for the widest range of human rights, particularly for the world’s most vulnerable people, and the urgent need to "replace punishment with support and promote policies that respect, protect and fulfil the rights of all communities.”

PRI at the UN Human Rights Council 50th session

The 50th session of the UN Human Rights Council is ongoing in Geneva since 13 June until tomorrow, 8 July 2022.

Over the past weeks, we have seen calls to, among other things, reform punitive drug policies and promote health and harm reduction measures in prisons (High Commissioner for Human Rights), address structural gender-based violence by police and in custodial settings (Special Rapporteur on the right to health), and implement the Bangkok Rules to provide adequate sanitary materials for women in prison (Chair of the UN Working Group on Discrimination Against Women and Girls).

PRI made the following oral statements at the Council, raising the rights of people in prisons and criminal justice systems:

Panel discussion on good governance in the promotion and protection of human rights during and after the COVID-19 pandemic
Interactive dialogue with the Independent Expert on human rights in Central African Republic
Panel discussion on the human rights of people in vulnerable situations in the context of climate change
PRI needs your support

People in prisons around the world continue to be left behind and often experience violence, neglect and human rights violations. Our practical reform approach continues to challenge and overturn policies that lead to prison overcrowding. We tirelessly work to improve conditions of detention, engaging a wide range of stakeholders. Our work is critical in seeing long-term sustainable reforms so that human rights of the millions of people in prison or in conflict with the law are not forgotten and supported. To continue to do this, we need your support. A donation from you today will allow us to continue our leadership and innovation in the criminal justice system. Thank you.
