PRI's Annual Report 2022

In a year in which the world reflected on how it had responded to the first pandemic of its kind in generations, PRI issued research and corresponding recommendations, practical models and analysis so lessons could be identified and applied in the future. Our Annual Report 2022 outlines the impact of our work supporting national authorities, civil society and other stakeholders across 15 countries in five regions to bring change so that ultimately the human rights of people in contact with criminal justice systems are better protected.

Open Letter to the Organisers of Women Deliver and the Generation Equality Forum

PRI joined 200+ organisations and individuals in an Open Letter calling on the organisers of Women Deliver and the Generation Equality Forum to ensure that these high-level forums on women’s rights are inclusive of all women, particularly criminalised, incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women.

The letter highlights that failing to do so is reflective of the marginalisation of the realities of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women and contributes to the lack of funding and policy reform which is needed to address the alarming increase in the criminalisation of women.

Regional Training of Trainers on the Nelson Mandela Rules in Serbia

PRI's Europe Programme Coordinator, Tanja Dejanova, with co-facilitators and participants
This year, one of the ways PRI marked Nelson Mandela International Day on 18 July was by joining our partners from OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), UNODC and the Swedish Prison and Probation Service in delivering a regional Training of Trainers on the UN Nelson Mandela Rules in Belgrade, Serbia, with participants from the prison services of Serbia, Croatia and North Macedonia.

Drawing from guidance developed by PRI in partnership with ODIHR, the five-day training translates the 122 Nelson Mandela Rules into practice through 8 comprehensive modules with engaging examples and participatory activities that harness participants’ existing experience and knowledge of prison work and criminal justice to support continuous learning and improvements in facilities and systems across contexts.

New resource:
Short Guide to the Nelson Mandela Rules now available in Kazakh

This Short Guide which summarises the UN Nelson Mandela Rules, the minimum standards that should be applied in prisons, has been published in Kazakh - making it now available in 13 languages.

PRI needs your support

People in prisons around the world continue to be left behind and often experience violence, neglect and human rights violations. Our practical reform approach continues to challenge and overturn policies that lead to prison overcrowding. We tirelessly work to improve conditions of detention, engaging a wide range of stakeholders. Our work is critical in seeing long-term sustainable reforms so that human rights of the millions of people in prison or in conflict with the law are not forgotten and supported. To continue to do this, we need your support. A donation from you today will allow us to continue our leadership and innovation in the criminal justice system. Thank you.
