Save the date - Global Prison Trends 2021  

Join us on 12 May 2021 at 15.00 CEST for the online launch of Global Prison Trends 2021, the seventh edition of PRI’s annual flagship report published with the Thailand Institute of Justice, identifying the key trends and challenges in prison systems worldwide. At the launch, global leaders, experts and practitioners will consider these trends and ways forward, including:

  • The impact of COVID-19 on prison populations globally and trends in responses and outcomes, including releases and new offences;
  • Trends in prison policy and practice, including around health and mental health, restrictions on movement and the use of solitary confinement;
  • Prison populations and issues for people belonging to specific groups in prisons;
  • Challenges in prison management, including security and violence, and the situation for prison staff.

UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice 

The 30th session of the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ) - the principle policymaking body of the UN in this field - will take place in Vienna and online from 17 - 21 May 2021. For those eligible to attend, registration is now open until 12 May. PRI will attend the Commission to raise key issues related to our strategic priorities, and we invite you to join a number of side events (you do not need to register for the CCPCJ to register for side events):

Towards the decriminalisation of petty offences in Africa

In March, the Campaign to Decriminalise Petty Offences in Africa (of which PRI is a member) and Open Society Foundations held a virtual convening "Righting a wrong!" to reflect on the implications of the recent Advisory Opinion issued by the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights which holds that Vagrancy Laws, that overwhelmingly target the poor and most marginalized, violate the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and places a positive obligation on African States to reform their criminal laws and halt unlawful arrest practices. Reflecting the global nature of this issue, the event included perspectives from the Caribbean, South Asia, Europe, and the US.

The impact of global drug policy on women: Shifting the needle

Earlier this month, PRI and five partners held an online launch of The Impact of Global Drug Policy on Women: Shifting the Needle (2020) at the 64th session of the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs in Vienna. The recording of the event is now available in English and Spanish - hear from Elizabeth Broderick, Chair of UN Working Group on discrimination against women, and several authors of the book on their experiences and research on the diverse ways in which global drug policies impact on women.

Women deprived of liberty and the excessive use of pre-trial detention in Peru

In this blog, Jérôme Mangelinckx from the Research Centre on Drugs and Human Rights (CIDDH) considers the drivers and implications of the growing female prison population in Peru, examining the overuse of detention for those awaiting trial, and how to move towards greater use of non-custodial alternatives to detention.
