Border Wall Update: Marianna Goes to Washington

For those of you following our fight to save the National Butterfly Center from the border wall, here’s a link to our executive director’s recent testimony before the House Natural Resource Committee, as well as a link to the full hearing.

We continue to publicize our plight in order to educate the public about the deleterious effects of habitat destruction and fragmentation, and all of the negative impacts of the border wall infrastructure project that will bisect our property.  

Yesterday, we received a ray of sunshine in the form of the House Homeland Security Committee border security proposal, wherein our U.S. Representative, Henry Cuellar, inserted language to exclude the National Butterfly Center from border wall construction; however, we have little hope the proposal will become law…Still your calls and postcards matter and the message is being heard!

Please keep sharing our story and contacting your Representatives and Senators. Urge them to stand firm against border wall funding, for the love of butterflies and all the wild things that make our world so special.

The Birds and the Bees

What a remarkable winter it’s been! Our bird list continues to grow, thanks to rare visitor’s like the Roadside Hawk and the Ferruginous Hawk (pictured here), both of which have brought visitors from far and wide.

In addition, visitors are beginning to come in search of (ISO) unusual bees, now that the word is out about the Wild Bees of the National Butterfly Center.  To learn more about these beneficial residents—and enjoy the beautiful photography of Paula Sharp and Ross Eatman—click here.
Also, look for their Wild Bee exhibit, coming to the Houston Museum of Natural History this summer.
