Farmworker Graduation

On August 16, MICOP's Farmworker Training Program, ÑUUU NU CHIEE, proudly celebrated the graduation of another group of dedicated farmworkers in Santa Maria, CA.

The ceremony marked a significant milestone for the participants, who earned their certifications in forklift operation and pesticide-safe handling. The evening was filled with joy and pride, as graduates were surrounded by their families and friends, reflecting on their hard-earned accomplishments. For many, this was a special occasion, as it was the first time they had the opportunity to wear a cap and gown.

Night in Oaxaca Recap
Night in Oaxaca: Nuestra Voz, Nuestro Poder took place earlier this month on August 9th, 2024. We are so grateful for everyone who attended and supported our Annual Fundraiser! The talented Maria Reyna, "Soprano Mixe," joined us and graced us with her beautiful singing!

Binational Dialogue between Farmworkers from San Quintin to California with Abelina Ramirez Ruiz
Born on March 24, 1970, in Oaxaca, she arrived in Baja California, where she began her life as a farm worker. For 14 years, Abelina suffered the injustices and labor abuses of the companies towards their workers.

In 2017, she joined the march from San Quintin, B.C., to Mexico City as the first and only woman spokesperson, representing the San Quintin day laborers.

In 2021, she became the first female general secretary of the National Union of Agricultural Jornaleros Agrícolas and founded a civil association for the defense of women workers, MUDJI.

Now, she will join us for a dialogue today, September 4th, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at 110 S Lincoln St in Santa Maria, CA.

Health Data Bill for Latine and Indigenous Mesoamericans Heads to Governor’s Desk
On August 27, 2024, the Latine and Indigenous Disparities Reduction Act passed its final vote in the legislature and is now headed to Governor Newsom's desk to be signed into law.

Over 40% of Californians are counting on Governor Newsom's vote toward health equity and justice. This legislation begins to address deep health disparities in the Latine and Indigenous communities in California, which annually contribute over $83 billion in state taxes. We celebrate the legislature's leadership in advancing this bill once again and urge Governor Newsom to support health and data justice in our state by signing this bill into law.

A Living wage for Farmworkers in Santa Barbara County
On August 27, Alianza Campesina attended the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors’ meeting to urge a living wage ordinance to guarantee them $26 an hour. Farmworkers have been among the lowest-paid workers for decades despite their back-breaking work in dangerous conditions to provide this country with fruits and vegetables. Farmworkers provide for the world yet can barely provide for their own families on their low wages. Support us in this journey as we urge the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors to pass this living wage ordinance! Sign the petition below!
