COVID Reader

May 14th, 2020 (No. 8)

There’s never been a time where having accurate, relevant and useful information is so important. So that’s what we want to bring to you here. This “COVID Reader” is a new weekly email brief that we hope will be short-lived. Here we share a select pick of reads on COVID-19 and its wider impacts and implications that we believe are relevant to your work and can help you understand and respond to the unfolding situation. We also share a few ideas from colleagues and partners on ways to navigate this crisis. We’re in this together.

Ideas and Inspiration

Community Conservation and COVID

Here’s what conservation leaders are saying about why they’re supporting community COVID response efforts:

"A healthy team and a healthy community is going to lead to resilience for conservation... We can’t do what we’re doing without that.” - Belinda Low, ED of Grevy’s Zebra Trust

"Conservation can’t happen without people’s basic needs being met...If people are sick in our landscapes, we can’t really go on.” - Resson Kantai Duff, Deputy Director of Ewaso Lions

“For us it’s important that we promote a long view on relationships with the communities we work with, in both good and bad times, rather than only showing support with when the climate is easier or more favorable” - Basilia Shivute, Operations Manager for Kunene Region, Integrated Rural Development and Nature Conservation

As of May 1st, the northern Kenyan conservation COVID collaboration, spearheaded by Community Health Africa Trust, Grevy’s Zebra Trust, and Ewaso Lions, has:

  • Raised more than $50,000 with an ongoing crowdfunding campaign

  • Equipped all of CHAT’s community healthcare workers with proper PPE equipment, thermometers, and official COVID 19 propotocl training

  • Reached 11,355 community members living in some of northern Kenya’s most underserved places with essential COVID information as well as soap and COVID-safe handwashing containers.
