The Kids First Newsletter:
April 11, 2019
Dear friends and partners,

Thank you for your continued support in putting kids first! As spring break approaches and the school year whizzes by, we've been hard at work to engage with our families, meet the needs of our schools, and set our kids up for success.

Read on to see what we've been up to! Take a look at the nearly $119M in projects we've funded in my district, including new Chromebooks, security systems, and much-needed facilities repairs—and encourage your school leaders to apply for this year's Board District 4 Bond Grant program; check out my latest school visits and meetings with parents and community members to listen to their educational needs and share my priorities for addressing those issues; learn more about Measure EE and my plan for strong, independent oversight; and more!
Onward,
Priorities in Practice: From the Boardroom to the Classroom
Putting kids first means transparency and strong accountability in improving academic outcomes. From the beginning of our discussions to put a parcel tax before voters, I have insisted on independent oversight for Measure EE funds so that these dollars make a difference in improving student outcomes. I have proposed that an independent oversight committee review and evaluate the district's expenditures to ensure that these funds are being spent appropriately and effectively toward this goal. Read more here.
One of my priorities since taking office has been to reduce the college-readiness barrier for all our students. To that end, I pushed to offer the SAT for free for all juniors during the school day for the first time this year (and I was onsite at Taft to help with some of the heavy lifting to set up!)
Putting kids first means providing our schools with the resources they need: since taking office, we have funded $118,818,620 in projects to directly benefit schools in my district!
Listening & Learning: Board District 4 in the Community
This school year, we have held over 80 parent and school community meetings, engaging and seeking the input of all our stakeholders in order to meet the needs of our families.
Recently, I met with parents and staff at Melrose Elementary, Woodland Hills Academy, Fullbright Elementary, Ingenium Charter School, and Calabash Charter Academy.
I also joined both Westside and West Valley parents in my district to answer questions and let them know why I voted to put Measure EE on the June ballot and why I'll insist on strong, independent oversight
We are working hard to meet parents where they are. Join the conversation by RSVPing to our next Digital Town Hall where we will answer questions and share key updates!
School Spot-L.I.G.H.T.S.: Hollywood High & Serrania Elementary
As part of down syndrome awareness week, Hollywood High freshman Michelle Kim has taken on the role of a self advocate, sharing her story with her peers and ABC News!
A group of "Conga Kids" from Serrania Elementary showed off their dance moves at yesterday's Committee of the Whole Board meeting. Needless to say, they stole the show!
