Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, we recommend that all voters take advantage of the Absentee Vote By Mail system. Gov. Cuomo and the New York Board of Elections have modified the definition of "temporary illness or physical disability" to include the risk of contracting the virus, which allows all NY residents to vote by mail via an Absentee ballot. 

How do I Request an Absentee Ballot?

Step One: Request or Fill Out an Absentee Voting Application

Note: Please check “temporary illness or physical disability” as the reason you are requesting an absentee ballot.

Step Two: Mail Back Your Application (by June 16th) 

  • Email your application to AbsenteeJune2020@boe.nyc
  • Fax your application to 212-487-5349
  • Mail your application to local borough office (see below)
Note:You are able to apply in-person at your local borough office until June 22nd.

Step Three: How do I turn in my Absentee Ballot?
Option (a): Mail in Your Ballot 

  • Mark your votes on your ballot. 
  • Fold the ballot and put it in a smaller envelope.
  • Sign and date the back of the envelope.
  • Seal the envelope and put it in the larger envelope that is addressed to the Board of Elections.
  • Mail or deliver your ballot to your borough Board of Elections office (see below).

Note: Your ballot must be postmarked by June 22nd and received no later than 7 days post-election (June 30th) in order to be counted

Option (b): Cast Your Ballot In-Person

  • Absentee ballots can be cast at the Board of Elections office in your borough.

  • Weekend prior to Election Day from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
  • On Election Day, absentee ballots can be cast until 9:00 PM

Bernie Sanders will be back on the June 23rd Democratic primary ballot in NY. As you know, this isn’t about Bernie becoming the nominee; it’s about preventing the disenfranchisement of voters in our state.
How did it happen? It started with us.

Other Qualifications to Vote by Absentee Ballot

- Absent from New York City on Election Day.
- Unable to appear at the polls due to temporary or permanent illness or disability; or because you are the primary care giver of one or more individuals who are ill or physically disabled.
- A patient or inmate in a Veterans' Administration Hospital.
- Detained in jail awaiting Grand Jury action or confined in prison after conviction for an offense other than a felony.
- An individual convicted of a Felony and on probation. However, you cannot vote after convicted of a Felony and imprisoned or on parole.

Overseas and Military Voters

If you are applying for an absentee ballot because you or your family are in the military or because you currently reside overseas, do not use the regular application.You are entitled to special provisions if you apply using the Federal Postcard Application.
  • To register as a new military voter and/or to request an absentee ballot, you must complete a Federal Post Card Application and return it to your county board of elections in New York.
  • This application will register you (if not already registered) and will also serve as your absentee ballot application for 2 federal general election cycles.
