When it comes to the tall order of protecting and restoring our planet’s endangered habitats, starting local is a sound rule of thumb. King County resident Mary Johnson took this notion seriously, discovering that in order to make a profound impact, she need not look further than her own Sammamish backyard.

Get Involved in Community Forestry Studies

Do you have Western redcedar or Oregon ash trees on your property or in your neighborhood? Are you concerned about their health or want to help scientists monitor them long-term? Two exciting studies are welcoming your input!

Forest Health Watch, led by Dr. Joey Hulbert at Washington State University, is a project to map and assess the health of western redcedar.

The Huntington Garden is working with the US Forest Service to collect seeds of Oregon ash (Fraxinus latifolia) to monitor for Emerald ash borer (EAB), an invasive insect that kills ash trees all over the US.

King County Green Globe Award Winners

King County announced the annual Green Globe award winners on Earth Day. We’d like to take a few moments to highlight a couple of award winners that KCD has proudly worked with over the years.

Greg Wingard’s work with several organizations over the years has helped KCD get native plants into many parts of King County, as well as helping KCD and cooperators work to improve water quality and riparian habitat in the Green-Duwamish watershed.

VanWieringen Organic Dairy Farm’s John VanWieringen has been working with KCD for many years to protect water quality along Boise Creek which runs through his farm. Boise Creek is critical habitat for salmon that navigate the Puyallup/White River watershed.

Harvest Against Hunger has been a partner with KCD in helping with food access in south King County. As a recipient of KCD Regional Food System Grant awards, they help not only get healthy food into the communities in need, but also support farmers producing that food.

Dirt Corps is another Green Globe recipient that has been a KCD partner over the years.

ECOSS is a recipient of multiple KCD Member Jurisdiction Grants. Their multilingual staff reach out to businesses informing communities about how to prevent pollution spills into local waterways, as well as connecting with residents about how to implement green home practices, thus improving the health of neighborhoods. KCD is currently partnering with ECOSS on two exciting pilot projects - working with Sound Transit and the City of Shoreline to restore forest canopy along the north light rail extension corridor, and working with King County to support septic owners to better maintain their systems.
