MLK Longfellow Creek Cleanup A Success

Picking up trash is not a glamorous task, but someone's got to do it!

Thanks to 35 volunteers who braved a chilly Saturday morning to come to our MLK Day of Service, we successfully cleaned up a segment of Longfellow Creek and along a section of the Longfellow Creek Legacy Trail in West Seattle. We are also grateful to Puget Soundkeeper Alliance for loaning us some of the supplies used at this event.

Longfellow Creek is one of the last four salmon bearing streams left in Seattle. King Conservation District has partnered with Seattle Parks, Green Seattle Partnership, King County, Nature Consortium (Delridge Neighborhood Development Association), Duwamish Alive Coalition, and the community over the last 10 years to undertake restoring the 11 acres of stream and urban forest. Like many other urban restoration sites, maintenance goes beyond controlling invasive species and installing additional native plants.

With grabbers and buckets in hand, our volunteers worked tirelessly and removed roughly 1240 pounds of garbage, which included approximately 265 glass bottles, 30 cans, numerous plastic bottles and plastic bags, building materials, a mower, a stroller, and a host of miscellaneous items.

Thanks again to our volunteers for making a difference for water, soil, plants, and wildlife!

KCD Board Elections

King Conservation District (KCD) will host an election in 2019 for Seat #1 on the KCD Board of Supervisors. All Supervisors are public officials who serve without compensation and who set policy and direction for the conservation district.

The primary method of voting in this election will be by mail-in, paper ballot that must be requested by the voter using an online or telephone ballot application process. Registered voters who reside within the conservation district boundary are eligible to vote. A hyperlink to this application will be available on the KCD website at 9:00 a.m. March 15th, 2019 and through the end of the voting period.

Alternatively, an in-person paper ballot polling station will also be available at the KCD Office (800 SW 39th St, Suite 150, Renton, WA 98057). This in-person polling site will be open from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. (PST) Monday through Friday only during the voting period.

The voting period will be from Monday, March 18th, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. through Friday March 29th, 2019 until 5:00 p.m. All ballots must be requested by the end of the voting period to be valid. Because this is an on-request mail-in election, no “absentee ballots” are necessary.

Published elections procedures can be viewed at the KCD Office. Contact the KCD office at 425-282-1900 with questions or visit the KCD Elections and Appointments webpage for more information.
