KCD Board of Supervisors Updates

KCD is excited to welcome Brittney Bush Bollay who was seated on KCD’s Board of Supervisors after winning the 2021 KCD Board of Supervisors Election for Position 3.

KCD is also welcoming back Bill Knutsen, who was reappointed by the Washington Conservation Commission, for another three-year term.

We are also saying goodbye and thank you for your service to Jim Haack.

King Conservation District Board Votes to Reorganize District Staff

In a vote Wednesday, May 26, the KCD board approved a motion to move forward with a reorganization of district staff. KCD sees this reorganization as necessary to improve the fiscal and structural health of the district and meet our obligations as a public organization.

WSU’s Kevin Zobrist Recognized As 2021 Forester of the Year

Kevin Zobrist’s selection as 2021 Forester of the Year by the Washington State Society of American Foresters. The WSU Professor and Extension Forester has worked closely with KCD over the years from attending the King County Fair to partnering with KCD staff on education events across King County. KCD has funded parts of WSU Extension Forestry Puget Sound Region over the years and we congratulate Kevin on this well-deserved award.

Washington State Envirothon 2021 Competition Completed

Students from across Washington state gathered virtually on Zoom in May for the 2021 WA State Envirothon competition. Hosted and planned this year with the help of eleven conservation districts across the state, including King Conservation District, this competition is a program that engages high school aged youth in natural resource and environmental sciences. Sixty-eight students from eleven different schools participated in the weeklong statewide event.

FBRC Offers Farm Business Support and Technical Assistance

A new suite of services and personalized coaching designed to provide needed farm and food business support has been launched, with the goal of building healthy, sustainable businesses in King County. Funded by a grant from King Conservation District’s Regional Food System Program, the Food Business Resource Center (FBRC) team at Business Impact NW will share information to help local farm businesses become more profitable. We are excited to provide strategic investment in this important project. It will directly address the business support and technical assistance needs of diverse farm and food businesses in our area.

Mt. Adams Institute Seeks KCD AmeriCorps Candidates

Are you a military veteran interested in a career in natural resource management, forestry, or arboriculture? King Conservation District is again working with Mt. Adams Institute to recruit applicants for an 11-month Forest Stewardship Technician AmeriCorps individual placement. These life-changing service opportunities promote skill development and build professional networks.

The Technician will receive in-depth training on forest management principles and skills for assessing forest conditions. Tasks include conducting forest inventories, creating GIS maps, participating in community education and outreach efforts, and monitoring active forest restoration projects with the overall goal of enhancing and protecting forest natural resources. Service includes office and field work and involves labor-intensive, multi-faceted duties that require a high level of motivation, versatility, and independence. Ideal candidates have an eagerness to learn about and apply forest health practices and principles in urban and rural settings.

Plans include having a candidate in place for a June 2021- April 2022 term, but there may be some flexibility on a starting date.
