King Conservation District is holding an election for Seat #2 on the Board of Supervisors. The following individuals are vying for the position:

Voting ends February 8, 2022 at 8:00pm

The election primarily relies on electronic ballot access, with alternative options for printing and mailing in ballots. King County Elections will tabulate all ballots and report all results. King Conservation District includes all registered voters in King County (excluding the cities of Enumclaw, Federal Way, Milton, Pacific, and Skykomish). Please visit kingcd.org/elections for details.

Native Plant Sale Almost Sold Out

KCD’s Plant Sale preorders opened November 15. The response this year has been tremendous. Only four species remain available including Oso Berry, Red Elderberry, Sitka Spruce, and Western Hemlock.

To help improve the pickup process at the Tukwila Community Center on March 12 and 13 and minimize customer waiting times, customers have selected a 1-hour pick-up time. We have been reaching out to customers who have not selected a pickup time. Please read the additional information in this newsletter about the pickup process. We will also be emailing customers in the coming weeks leading up to the pickup dates with reminders and details.

Plant Sale Pick-up Days Details

Pick-up dates are March 12 and 13 at the Tukwila Community Center: 12424 42nd Ave S, Tukwila, WA 98168.

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday or Sunday. All orders must be picked up on your selected date/time that you confirmed in the shipping portion of the checkout process. Please be prompt for your selected date and time.

Pickup day procedures:

  • Please follow the safety guidelines to keep everyone safe.
  • Please wear a mask.
  • Walk up pickup is at the overhead door on the east side of the Community Center building near the baseball field.
  • Please maintain physical distancing.
  • Please leave promptly after picking up your plants.

Due to COVID-19 Safety Protocols, if you need to enter the Tukwila Community Center to use the restrooms you will need to have your proof of vaccination..

If you do not know your pick-up date and time, please contact plantsale@kingcd.org as soon as possible and someone will respond within 5 business days. Please make sure to check your SPAM folder to make sure that you have received emails from plantsale@kingcd.org.

Pick-up Days Traffic Alert! Bridge Closure

Please leave plenty of time to get to the Tukwila Community Center. The 42nd St/Allentown Bridge is closed and you will need to approach the Community Center from the east via 129th St or from the north via 42nd Ave. Truck traffic may impact your travel, even on the weekend.

2022 KCD Seattle Community Partnership Grant Program Now Accepting Applications

King Conservation District (KCD) and Seattle’s Office of Sustainability and Environment (OSE) are excited to announce that the 2022 Seattle Community Partnership Grant Program is now accepting applications! Organizations seeking to improve natural resources and advance environmental equity.

Applications are due February 4, 2022 at 11:59pm.

Eligible projects can focus on a number of areas for natural resource improvement, including:

  • Managing and preventing stormwater pollution
  • Protecting and restoring creeks, shorelines and wetlands
  • Building healthy soil
  • Supporting the urban forest
  • Supporting a sustainable food system

Registration Now Open for NW Envirothon Competition

Washington State Envirothon is an annual environmental and natural resource competition for high school students organized by Washington Conservation Districts. Teams of students compete in five natural resource topic areas, engage with diverse environmental issues, and learn from natural resource professionals.

King Conservation District (KCD) is recruiting King County educators and high school students interested in participating in this year’s NW Regional competition. The 2022 Northwest Regional Envirothon competition will be held on March 24, 2022. Registration is now open for teams.

April 21 - Riparian Habitat and Invasive Species Control: Seeing the Salmon Stream through the Weeds

Riparian habitat, the area surrounding streams and other bodies of water, is a common habitat type found in forests all across Washington. These areas are often hard to manage and easily overrun with invasive species. What can you do with that strip of trees along your stream? Learn about how you can improve your riparian habitat for wildlife and water quality and manage invasive species infestations.

In May (date and location TBD) we will have a forest field day at a local family owned tree farm to look at all of the elements of stewardship forestry that we have discussed during the winter webinars. Participants will receive a Zoom link after registering and filling out a very short pre-webinar survey.

Got Manure or Want Manure?

KCD’s online Manure Match is an easy way to find or offer manure. KCD maintains a list of livestock owners who provide surplus manure for free to people seeking aged manure and/or mulch. Manure Match is a simple, free way to recycle valuable nutrients and organic matter.

If you need manure for your yard or garden, or if you are a livestock owner in King county with surplus manure, submit a request to be added.

Growing Groceries Education Series

October 2021 - March 2022, Wednesdays, 7pm9pm
Online via Zoom

You can grow fresh food in a healthier, more environmentally friendly way. The Growing Groceries Education Series classes are continuing through March 2022 and are designed to help you learn how to grow your own food.

Have to miss one? No problem! A link to an online recording will be sent to everyone registered along with links to resources and more! Take only the classes you want ($5 per class).

With an overall focus on limited space, resources, and challenges of western Washington weather and soils, the series of speakers and topics will help beginners and long time gardeners learn more about growing food using healthy and sustainable practices.
