New software cuts time and cost from gene sequencing

Michael Schatz, a Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of computer science and biology, led a team that developed a software that could revolutionize how DNA is sequenced.

Dog training methods help JHU teach robots to learn new tricks
 

With a training technique commonly used to teach dogs to sit and stay, Johns Hopkins computer scientists showed a robot how to teach itself several new tricks, including stacking blocks. With the method, Spot the robot was able to learn in days what typically takes a month.

New Program

Workshop series provides resources for underrepresented students interested in computer science


Created by Associate Professor of Computer Science Soudeh Ghorbani, The Introduction to Computing Research program will teach underrepresented students about various areas of computing research, and connect them to mentors and research internship opportunities.

Recognition

Steven Salzberg named a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery


Salzberg was selected for his contributions to computational biology, including software for DNA sequence analysis, alignment, and genome assembly.

A Design Day project with vision: Students create improved screen reader for the visually impaired


One computer science team developed an artificially intelligent screen reader reads webpage content out loud to users - but unlike most screen readers currently available, “A Set of Eyes” doesn’t work mechanically to just read aloud loud whatever is hardcoded onto a webpage. Instead, it uses computer vision and a flexible user interface to create a more accessible—and natural—experience for users.
