This week ISD hosted our 22nd PPN (Policy Planners Network) meeting in Spain, bringing together policy chiefs from across the globe to discuss the impact of offline and online interventions on countering extremism.
During this closed-door meeting, the ISD team presented data and analysis of online interventions and discussed how these interactions can foster deradicalisation and disengagement. This included presenting key findings from ISD’s One to One project, an initiative which facilitates constructive dialogue with people who demonstrate support for extremist ideologies online.
The two-day event was attended by top representatives from the governments of Albania, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK.
Jonathan Birdwell, Head of Policy and Research at ISD: "The PPN provides valuable resources and expertise for member states, allowing them to better tackle the emerging threats they face - from the reintegration of foreign fighters, to the rise of online hate speech.
“This meeting in Spain provided members with an opportunity to discuss intervention efforts around the world and gain practical insights into the major policy challenges surrounding these counter extremism efforts."
For almost a decade, ISD’s PPN has provided a forum for national governments to share information and best practice for designing and implementing counter extremism policies.
