Bring your class to Interference Archive (online)

One of the highlights for us of a strange and hard 2020 was the opportunity to connect virtually with classes across North America. In the midst of being stuck at home, we were so grateful for amazing conversations about archives, social movements, and cultural production.

Are you an educator? Do you have a group of students that you'd love to bring to Interference Archive? In support of online learning everywhere, our Education Working Group is excited to continue offering online visits. Read more about what we can offer and how to request a visit on our blog.

Support Biblioteca Social Reconstruir

“It is with great sadness that I share the news that Tobi of the Biblioteca Social Reconstruir In Mexico City passed away January 10 after contracting Covid. His comrades in the US launched a fund to help get him medical treatment not accessible in Mexico, but sadly it was too late.

Tobi was a punk and an anarchist who dedicated his life to the Biblioteca Social Reconstruir. Founded in 1978 by Spanish civil war exile Ricardo Mestre, the BSR is a project similar in spirit to the Interference Archive. It’s an autonomous and independent anarchist cultural archive that houses thousands of pamphlets, newspapers, magazines, books, and ephemera from Mexico and Latin America, as well as items from the rest of the world, including 1st editions from the 1800s to present day materials.

When Mestre passed in 1997, universities wanted to buy the collection, but Tobi stepped up to make sure that it stayed in the hands of the movement and remained accessible to everyone, not just a few. He recognized the important the texts and their living histories of struggles and dreams.

I first met him in 1994 and we collaborated off and on over the years. What made Tobi such a special presence was his openness and enthusiasm, his ability to critique without cynicism, his love of ideas and liberty. He was always excited to show people rare parts of the collection, talk about the texts, and suggest materials for people to sit and read. His day to day work was to make the BSR a part of the community – both in the working-class neighborhood that housed it, and for political communities in Mexico and the world.

Rest in Power, Hasta Siempre, Compañero Tobi”

Donations to the fundraiser for Tobi will now support his memorial. Donate through the GoFundMe organized for US and European contributions.
