Resistance Radio: The People’s Airwaves
Exhibition dates: July 11 - September, 2019
Opening Exhibition: Thursday, July 11, 6-9pm
Interference Archive is pleased to announce our upcoming exhibition, Resistance Radio: The People’s Airwaves, which looks at the history of radio as a medium for grassroots movements and their organizing work. Radio has remained a consistently popular form of communication over the past decade, in part because of certain unique features: it is relatively cheap and accessible, it is a form of media that is inherently tied to its location and its local community, and it reaches populations not served by online media, including those for whom language or literacy is a barrier. Radio, both past and present, has been attractive to those who wish to embrace a DIY ethos and a spirit of resistance, and to others as a platform for community building and the development of a political consciousness. This exhibition focuses on radio endeavors created to reach communities not served by mainstream outlets. We’re interested in the people, stations, and organizations that have battled to bring their defiant programming onto the airwaves, and particularly in cases where these actions were in service of grassroots movements and/or community organizing. Resistance Radio: The People’s Airwaves tells some of the stories of these rebellious broadcasters.

Reflecting the Airwaves: the Microbroadcasting Movement Then and Now
Saturday, July 13, 5:00pm
In the 1990s, Rebel Radio: The Story of El Salvador’s Radio Venceremos by José Ignacio López Vigil and Mark Fried circulated to activist and alternative circles in the US and sparked a revolution in how people understood the power of radio to communicate and cultivate community, inspiring individuals to start their own low power FM radio stations and sparking a micro broadcasting movement.
Join us for a conversation with radio broadcasters, activists, and academics about the microbroadcasting movement in the US and its legacy and influence today. Marnie Brady / DJ Poinsettia, broadcaster and assistant professor at Marymount Manhattan; DJ Maude Ontario (AKA Amanda Huron), co-founder of Radio CPR in Washington, DC; and Pete Tridish, who launched Philadelphia-based pirate station Radio Mutiny and the Prometheus Radio Project, and now is a radio engineer who builds participatory radio for social justice organizing and community expression; will discuss their experience with radio broadcasting as a tool for organizing. Audio Interference 66: The Poor People's Campaign
In this episode, we’re speaking with activists, organizers, musicians and artists who are a part of The Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival. The movement is building on the Poor People’s Campaign of 1968, a national movement led by Reverend Dr Martin Luther King Junior to unite the poor. We focus our conversation on the role music and art plays, and has played, in this movement.
A huge thank you to Ciara Taylor, Pauline PIsano, and Charon Hribrar for speaking with us for this episode.

Building Solidarity: Supporting Community Organizations through Archival Practice
Part 1: Tuesday, July 16, 6-8:30 PM at Interference Archive
Part 2: Thursday, July 18, 6-8:30 PM at Asian American Arts Alliance
For the past several decades, community archives–such as Interference Archive, the Lesbian Herstory Archives, and many others–have been important sites of self-determination, memory, and inspiration for historically disenfranchised communities. The unique skills and perspectives of community archivists can also be valuable contributions to community-based organizations.
Over this two-part workshop will explore the work of community archivists. Participants will leave with a theoretical grounding in the current activist and professional conversations around community archives, knowledge about how archival skills can support the work of community organizations, suggestions for practical tools, and experience putting these tools into practice.
We ask that participants commit to attending both evenings. Read more and RSVP on Eventbrite (suggested but not required).
