Hi-Viz: Australian Political Posters 1979–2019
February 8 – April 14, 2019
Opening reception: Friday, February 8, 6-9pm
From the collection of Alison Alder
HI-VIS: AUSTRALIAN POSTERS 1979–2019 is an exhibition of screen-printed posters that provide a visual commentary of politics and life in Australia over the last four decades. Renowned for their high visibility, particularly in the 1980s with their saturated fluorescent colors, these posters describe the times and events that have engaged socially active artists throughout recent periods of major change.
Many of the topics addressed in these posters remain relevant today including Indigenous rights, gender politics, unemployment, and the environment. Contemporary Australian artists are reinvigorating the screen printed poster as a form of protest and information sharing by pasting the work onto the wall and value adding to its potency by posting on social media. These posters, with their ability to encapsulate ideas into a single image, continue to provoke debate, galvanize ideas into action, and invigorate those working toward an equitable and just society.

Conflict & Crisis in Myanmar
Saturday, February 9, 5-6:30pm
Join Interference Archive for a rare visit by someone deeply involved in the urgent struggle to for free speech and peaceful coexistence in South East Asia. Decades of Military domination are coming to an end but despite the Burmese government coming under partial civilian control under Aung San Suu Kyi, the space for civil society continues to shrink, along with its ability to manage ethnic & religious diversity. As is well-known, Burmese journalists are increasingly arrested on trumped up charges. The promise of democracy is fading & the international community appears either hapless or complicit in the persecution of Rohingya and other minorities, well known around the world, but largely denied in Myanmar (Burma) itself. Audio Interference 60: Radical Psychology at Alternate U
This episode of Audio Interference features highlights from an event at the archive with Keith Brooks and Phil Brown, in which they shared their experiences in the critical psychology movement that was a part of the revolutionary environment at Alternate U. Phil and Keith helped set up the organization Psychologists for a Democratic Society (an offshoot of Students for a Democratic Society), which published a newspaper under the same name.
Radical psychology and the politics of mental illness were an important part of social movements in the 1970s and 1980s, and central issues in free education experiments, including Alternate U. In 1970, Keith Brooks ran a course called Towards a Radical Psychology, centered around psychology in the context of the global liberation struggle and the questions of “what is its role and whose side is it on?” Phil Brown ran a course called Demystification of Contemporary Psychology, challenging what he called the “Myth of Mental Illness.” Listen on our website or your favorite podcast app.

New resources from the Education Working Group
The Education Working Group at Interference Archive has spent some time over the last year and a half thinking about how we can better support classroom educators want to use our collections with their students.
How can we give access for teachers who can’t bring their students? How can we help teachers who do reach out to book a class visit (more info about that on our Visit page), if they’d like to talk about archival material in advance of bringing students, or if they want some kind of followup activity?
Our collective brainstorming led us to create a series of curriculum resources related to health and health care. Check out (and download!) these free resources on our blog.
