Tonight at Interference Archive:

Celebrate PROTEST! the latest issue of Women’s Studies Quarterly

Tuesday, November 6, 6:30pm

Join us for the launch and celebration of PROTEST – the latest issue of Women’s Studies Quarterly! Editors and contributors will offer a brief glimpse into the issue, reading excerpts of our texts and sharing images of the artwork to generate a discussion of feminist protest that moves us beyond a focus on highly visible acts of protest, such as marches and demonstrations, to the multiple registers and repertoire of tactics that individuals and groups engage to call for and build another world. After, we’ll celebrate with food & drink and a zine-making party! Read more information on our website.

Contemplating War and Peace: films and poetry for Veterans’ Day

Saturday, November 10, 7pm

The battles of our daily lives are fought with images. And the images we choose to create and consume define who we are as both individuals and as a society. This evening of films by Chris Benker, with poetry reading by Jerome Mazzaro, serves as an opportunity to contemplate the role of empathy as our only hope for a peaceful future. Audio Interference 56: WTO Protests, Seattle 1999

“I remember walking home from that huge protest and feeling this sense of huge hope in the air…And it was just really exciting and it felt like things actually could change.” –Becca Shaw Glazer

In this episode of Audio Interference, we speak with activists who participated in protests against the World Trade Organization in the 1990s and 2000s. The 1999 Seattle protest against the WTO is often seen as the beginning of a worldwide anti-globalization movement and the Indymedia movement. About 40,000 people took to the streets to express their dissent, and protestors successfully blocked delegates from entering the convention center, delaying the meeting. The protests became known as “The Battle of Seattle” because of the police violence that ensued in response. We focus on the protests that took place in Seattle, and then share an interview with someone who participated in WTO protests in Cancun, one of the protests that took place globally as a result. Current Exhibition:

Free Education! The Free University of New York, Alternate U., and Learning Liberation

October 11, 2018 – January 27, 2019
Opening reception: October 11, 2018, 6-9pm
Curated by Jakob Jakobsen and Interference Archive

Rooted in an examination of the history of the Free University of New York (FUNY), a 1960s experiment in radical education, this exhibition combines original archival documents from FUNY as well as from related projects, including Alternate U. and the Freedom Schools movement, to explore what it means to have a space for community at the intersection of learning, art and politics.

In our current moment, when the price of education amounts to crippling student debt and underemployment is a reality for even the most qualified post-secondary graduates, Free Education! aims to generate conversation about what it looks like to reimagine possibilities for education.

This exhibition includes an audio component featuring dialogue based on the transcripts of interviews with former participants of the Free University of New York and Alternate U recorded in 2017 and 2018. Interviewees include Susan Sherman, David McReynolds, Stanley Aronowitz, AB Spellman, Keith Brooks, Norman Fruchter, Robert Machover, Miriam Frank, Sue Simensky and Joe Berke. We are grateful to them for their generosity in sharing of their life stories. Additional material in the exhibition is made available through Susan Sherman, Keith Brooks, Perry Brass, Tamiment Library and Robert F. Wagner Labor Archives, and PETT archive. The exhibit curators hope that this exhibition will recognize and honor the legacy of David McReynolds, war resister and Free University lecturer, 1930 – 2018.
