A year of change: IIED annual review 2020

2020 was a year unlike any other, and last week IIED published our annual review documenting how the institute and our partners responded to that extraordinary year of change.

The year was dominated by the COVID-19 pandemic, and its impacts and grassroots responses feature strongly in our annual review. The review presents eight short videos – all recorded remotely by our researchers and partners around the world – to tell the story of their continuing work for a better future for all.

The Dasgupta Review needed to engage today's finance ministers: here’s how

IIED's chief economist Paul Steele sets out ways to spur urgent and immediate investment in biodiversity conservation – complementing recommendations from Dasgupta’s landmark review.

"Without tangible figures on the costs of inaction on biodiversity loss and fiscal and monetary policy recommendations, the review misses engaging current finance ministers and economic decision-makers, whose support is urgently needed to reverse the nature crisis."

CBA15: Can adaptation be a superhero in the 'super year' for climate and nature?

Innovation will be key in bouncing forward from COVID-19 and delivering on the ambitions of the super year – to protect nature, tackle poverty and accelerate climate action. The 15th International Conference on Community-based Adaptation to Climate Change (CBA15) will take place online from 14-18 June 2021, and the CBA community will be ready to hold decision-makers accountable on the commitments they make this year.

Drought management in India: hostage to climate information governance

While communities in India affected by climate change, and the agencies that support them, need access to short and long-term weather forecasts to plan their responses to increasingly erratic rainfall, the current climate information governance system stops this from happening. Ritu Bharadwaj and Simon Addison show that the system needs reworking.

Poverty-centred local adaptation in Mozambique

Social protection systems aim to eradicate poverty but often only reach a minority of the poorest households. Those eligible for social protection are often vulnerable to climate impacts that risk driving them further into poverty. The PRIORIZE Initiative worked at district level in Mabote district to align social protection with climate adaptation, adopting a variant of the ‘adaptive social protection’ approach — what we call ‘poverty-centred local adaptation’. This publication reflects on key learnings from the initiative and explores the way forward.
