New collection of community development laws for the mining sector

The Community Development in Mining Collection has been developed by IIED, Sustainable Development Strategies Group and Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment. It includes almost 300 pieces of legislation from 54 countries, to encourage better research and policy.

Community development requirements in mining legislation are increasing exponentially. This resource centralises legislation for researchers, policy makers, mining-impacted communities and their advocates to better understand the diversity of legislative arrangements. Could more scrutiny of legislation help achieve policy objectives? Let us know what you think!

Locally led adaptation – a time for action

At the start of 2021, 40 governments and leading organisations endorsed eight principles for locally led adaptation. As the number of endorsers grows, IIED has launched an innovative podcast mini-series of three episodes to explore what this commitment will mean in practice.

Listen to the first episode, From principles to practice: commitments from donor organisations.

This rich and interactive online course will provide an entry point for understanding pastoralism, and a valuable tool for navigating the available knowledge.

New biodiversity framework can learn from climate change experience

At the UN Convention on Biological Diversity COP15 this year, negotiators keen to drive a whole-of-society step-change in tackling the biodiversity crisis can take inspiration from the climate change agenda. This paper draws on lessons from UNFCCC processes and outcomes to outline two practical opportunities to achieve a strong and effective post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework: scale up finance and strengthen business engagement.
