This week we have an upcoming webinar on changing village life in Mali, blogs on nature-based solutions, urban change, new publications and more.

Land, investment and migration: a portrait of village life in Mali

The effects of the climate crisis, new technologies, and land grabs have altered the livelihoods and prospects of villagers living in Central Mali.

Join us for an online event with Camilla Toulmin, Bara Guèye and Professor Nicholas Stern on 17 June, World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, to discuss how people survive and thrive in the uncertain and risk-prone Sahel.

Finding solutions in nature for climate change

On the recent International Day of Biological Diversity, IIED hosted a multi-stakeholder webinar on how to work with nature to mitigate and adapt to climate change and halt biodiversity loss. IIED senior researcher Xiaoting Hou Jones chaired the event, and she shares some highlights from the discussions in this blog.

Using technology to overcome challenges for farmers in value chains

Value chains are structured in ways that are unfavourable to smallholder farmers who often struggle to access finance, inputs and markets. An IIED webinar discussed how smallholders in East Africa can use technology to overcome those challenges and negotiate with buyers and input and finance providers from a position of strength.

Every voice counts in a changing climate

Every voice counts in a changing climate

The ‘Stronger Voices’ project has developed community-based planning tools for local government, community members, cooperatives and civil society organisations to identify the climate priorities of marginalised groups and find solutions if these priorities are not being met. The tools take the form of a participatory workshop conducted in local languages, taking participants through a step-by-step process that enables different groups to identify and articulate their concerns, understand how gender roles affect the communities’ resilience and develop an action plan.

This Reflect & Act explores the key lessons learnt, and plans for next steps

The use of dialogue within IIED’s work

This report is a first attempt to generate learning to illuminate current practice and inform future work. It explores the different definitions, functions and features of dialogue and examines the theory of change behind IIED’s dialogue-based initiatives, while findings from two case studies examine their effectiveness. The report concludes with key recommendations: support a new common language or framework to analyse dialogue; create common guidelines for designing dialogues; and invest in systematic learning and capacity building for staff.
