Pushed past coping: IIED animation captures destruction of climate change loss and damage in Sierra Leone
A new animation from IIED – the second in a three-part series of animations on loss and damage caused by climate change in the least developed countries – shows the devastating loss and damage experienced by people of Freetown, Sierra Leone. Meteorologist and UN climate negotiator Gabriel Kpaka describes a time in his youth when the high temperatures and humidity were manageable, and the rains nourished the land. But Kpaka explains how loss and damage from climate change is escalating rapidly, and citizens of Freetown can no longer cope.
In the two-minute clip, available in English and Sierra Leonean Krio, he urges national and international climate policymakers to recognise that loss and damage from climate change wrecks lives and livelihoods, and calls for urgent financial and technical support from governments across the world.

Using food diaries within a citizen agency framework
Food diaries are a well-established methodology within nutrition studies to gather information about people’s diets. When participants are responsible for collecting their own data they can have a greater degree of ownership and agency. Drawing on studies in Indonesia and Uganda, this paper reflects on the experiences of using food diaries to generate dietary data with citizens, and the usefulness of this data for advocacy.

How collective action can influence the direction of a land reform: lessons learned from civil society mobilisation in Senegal
This study examines how Senegalese CSOs operating within the framework for dialogue and action on land in Senegal (CRAFS) mobilised around the process of formulating a draft land reform led by the National Land Reform Commission (CNRF) between 2014 and 2016. After describing how members of CRAFS contributed to the debate on the need for an inclusive land reform and their active and critical contributions to the CNRF process, this paper analyses the achievements and limitations of their engagement in the process and the lessons learned from it.
