Putting cities into focus at COP26

IIED will be helping to drive the urban agenda at COP26, working with our partners to show how local action can lead to low carbon and resilient futures for cities around the world.
Development and Climate Days.

Development and Climate Days (D&C Days)

Human settlements research group director, David Dodman, and principal researcher, Aditya Bahadur will be curating and convening the urban theme at D&C days this year. D&C Days is all online this year, and it is open to all. There is an exciting line-up of events:

  • 'Radical collaboration for urban resilience' from the Adaptation Research Alliance,
  • Civil society engagement in urban adaptation by the Cities Alliance
  • Transformative urban futures by IIED, WIEGO, SDI and others.

Resilience Hub.

Resilience Hub

The 'urban pillar' at the Resilience Hub will be led by David Dodman and Aditya Bahadur, who will be infusing the events with urban dimensions.

They will lead and participate in an exciting programme of urban events, including working with others to lead a ‘Tri-Pillar Event’ event on the linkages between urban/rural/coastal pillars of the Resilience Hub, and what drives risk.

Register to attend in-person and online.

Urban October

What does decarbonizing our cities mean for the urban poor?

In a blog for World Habitat Day, Anna Walnycki and Tucker Landesman consider what role climate mitigation projects can and should play in reducing urban inequality. Climate action that contributes to a carbon-free world and inclusive, just cities is a central theme of the Transformative Urban Coalitions project.

Environment and Urbanization

The new issue of Environment and Urbanization focuses on citizen participation in planning. Contexts range from Serbia to Cuba, and themes range from participatory budgeting for climate change to the queering of planning itself. Most papers are available open access. To receive access to the other papers, please email a request to eandu@iied.org.

Urban blogs and publications

Do urban populations benefit from urban bias?

Conventional wisdom suggests that most poverty is in rural areas. But as there is so little research, how can we know if this is true? Read the blog by David Satterthwaite.

Introduction to housing justice

IIED’s programme of work on housing builds partnerships and research that informs community-led and resilient housing responses in cities of the global South. A new collection about IIED's work in this area has been released.

UN Secretary-General’s High Level Panel on Internal Displacement

The UN Secretary-General’s High Level Panel on Internal Displacement recently released its final report, which highlighted the importance of the urban dimension of internal displacement. Lucy Earle published a related policy briefing to coincide with the report’s release, making the case for “treating long-term urban IDPs as city residents”.

Street vendors and garbage pickers need protection from climate extremes

Two billion people globally do informal work that exposes them to unsafe conditions like extreme heat, air pollution and flooding. Read the blog by Alice Sverdlik in Climate Home News.

‘Cities for Human Development: a capability approach to city-making’

Drawing on the work of Amartya Sen and others from the field of human development and capability debate, Cities for Human Development, a new book by Alexandre Apsan Frediani, aims to approach city-making from the lens of the capability approach.
