From principles to practice: commitments from donor organisations – first episode of new podcast mini-series

At the start of 2021, 40 governments and leading organisations endorsed eight principles for locally led adaptation. As the number of endorsers grows, IIED has launched an innovative podcast mini-series to explore what this commitment will mean in practice.

The first episode in the three-part series, ‘From principles to practice: commitments from donor organisations’, features IIED's Aditya Bahadur as host with Heather McGray of the Climate Justice Resilience Fund; Cristina Dengel of the Adaptation Fund; Vincent Gainey with UK Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office; and Suranjana Gupta of the Huairou Commission.

We need to rethink investment treaties to ensure a rapid and just energy transition

As world leaders recently met at the Leaders Summit on Climate to discuss how to step up global climate action and cut emissions, guest blogger Kyla Tienhaara explained that it’s time to reconsider investor-state dispute settlement. Inaction risks rising costs of shifting from fossil fuels to green alternatives.

Supporting LDCs to negotiate and implement the enhanced transparency framework under the Paris Agreement

IIED is supporting the least developed countries to actively participate in the enhanced transparency framework for action and support as defined by the Paris Agreement. This new reporting and review process is key to build trust, track progress towards countries’ commitments and increase global ambition to stay below 1.5°C.

Planning a green and resilient COVID-19 recovery in The Gambia

The impacts of COVID-19 are being felt across The Gambia’s socioeconomic landscape, exacerbating existing inequalities and threatening hard-won progress. In response, the government has partnered with UNDP, establishing a secretariat to reprioritise the current national development plan to serve as a blueprint for a resilient and green recovery —one with people, nature and climate at its core. Here, we explore the considerations and requirements that must underpin effective COVID-19 recovery planning in The Gambia, and propose strategic interventions.

New biodiversity framework can learn from climate change experience

At the UN Convention on Biological Diversity COP15 this year, negotiators keen to drive a whole-of-society step-change in tackling the biodiversity crisis can take inspiration from the climate change agenda. This paper draws on lessons from UNFCCC processes and outcomes to outline two practical opportunities to achieve a strong and effective post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework: scale up finance and strengthen business engagement.
