Dear friends,
The IIED artisanal and small-scale mining team has been back to Ghana and Tanzania for 'thematic dialogues', and we've been sharing stories of miners and communities in Tanzania, Ghana and Madagascar online and in new photo books.
The thematic dialogue sessions covered a variety of issues: women in ASM; the ASM-LSM-government interface; how ASM incorporates with agriculture and other land use and the challenges and solutions for sustainable livelihoods; development of ASM and linked businesses; and ASM formalisation.
We'll be attending the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF) annual general meeting, and hope you'll follow along too.

Tanzania uni and bi-stakeholder engagements
Stakeholder engagements were conducted over 11-19 May 2017 in Mirerani, Geita, Dodoma and Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. At the engagements we presented preliminary research findings and gathered inputs from the participants regarding their priority issues and solutions, as well as their comments on the design of a Tanzanian dialogue.
The findings of these engagements and the Tanzanian thematic dialogues have been incorporated into ASM dialogue research and will inform the upcoming national ASM action dialogue in November in Geita, Tanzania.

Tanzania ASM ‘action’ dialogue
From 7-10 November, IIED along with Tanzanian partners will host a participatory national ASM ‘action’ dialogue involving approximately 70 participants in Geita, Tanzania.
This ‘action' dialogue will engage multiple stakeholders over four days starting with two-day field trips for learning and experience sharing, followed by a two-day workshop to scope a Tanzanian ASM Roadmap for reform. The meeting will also establish a Learning and Leadership Group (LLG) to guide the refinement and implementation of the Roadmap.
