From Silence To Action
May 24th, 2024
On May 24th, 2024, "From Silence to Action! A Panel Discussion on How to Begin Addressing the Missing & Murdered Indigenous People Crisis Locally and Beyond" was held at San Jose City Hall. Presented by the Indian Health Center of Santa Clara Valley and co-hosted by San Jose City Councilmember Peter Ortiz, this event united Indigenous leaders and policymakers to address the crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP).

The U.S. Department of Justice reports that Indigenous women in some communities face murder rates ten times the national average. California ranks sixth in urban Indigenous women's death rates, per the Urban Indian Health Institute. Historical traumas and disparities in health, housing, and child welfare contribute to this crisis.

If you missed the event, watch the recording here.

Sponsors: The Indian Health Center of Santa Clara Valley, Council Member Peter Ortiz (District 5), the Santa Clara County Office of Women's Policy, the Santa Clara County Office of Gender-Based Violence Prevention, and the California Consortium for Urban Indian Health supported the event.

Special Thanks: We extend our gratitude to keynote speaker Abigail Echo-Hawk (Urban Indian Health Institute), emcee Virginia Hedrick (California Consortium for Urban Indian Health), co-host Council Member Peter Ortiz, and panelists Sonya Tetnowski (Indian Health Center CEO), Angel Fabian (Bay Area American Indian Two Spirits), Morning Star Gali (Indigenous Justice), Assembly Member Ash Kalra (25th District), Ruth Silver Taube (Katharine & George Alexander Community Law Center), and Deputy Chief Steve Lagorio (SJPD).

San Jose Youth Empowerment Group
May 16th, 2024
On Thursday, May 16th, our San Jose Native Youth Empowerment Group had a fantastic time on a spring hike! They hiked up an Alum Rock trail, taking in the stunning view of the entire park and spotting deer, squirrels, and butterflies. The youth all agreed that this activity was the highlight of their day and expressed a strong desire to bring their friends along next time. These engaging outdoor activities are not just fun; they are a powerful tool for improving mental health, providing physical exercise, boosting self-esteem, and fostering social support, making them an essential part of our group's mission!
