This May is also Mental Health Awareness Month, so we invited Tamara Strong-Chavez from our IHC Counseling department to discuss mental health and strategies for maintaining it, particularly during challenging times like MMIP month when past traumas may resurface.

Indigenous Women Are Sacred Recap
May 8th, 2024
On Wednesday, May 8th, SJSU's Native American Indigenous Student Success Center (NAISSC) recently hosted the empowering event "Indigenous Women Are Sacred." The panel featured esteemed Indigenous scholars and activists including Sharon Rose Torres, Dina Omar, 'Ihilani Lasconia, and Danielle Vielle. Their discussions shed light on pressing issues facing Indigenous communities, from cultural sensitivity to MMIP+ awareness.

A special thanks to the dedicated planning committee and Dr. Soma De Bourbon for their efforts in making the event possible. "Indigenous Women Are Sacred" emphasized the importance of amplifying Indigenous voices and fostering dialogue around crucial issues. Let's continue to honor and support Indigenous communities in their journey towards equity and justice.

Healing of American Service Members Gathering
April 20th, 2024
On Saturday, April 20th, IHC Counseling Prevention Services hosted a special gathering for our fellow American Indian service members and their families. We came together to prioritize mental well-being with a day of prayer, healing, and community support. Gatherings like these can help reduce feelings of isolation, provide emotional support, and encourage Veterans to seek help when needed.

We thank and appreciate all American Indian service members for their service. Welcome home!
Inter-Tribal Outreach Efforts
April 8th, 16th & 17th
The IHC Inter-Tribal Resource Department has actively engaged with the community to promote the Indian Health Center's presence in indigenous circles and foster new collaborations. Stephanie Reynolds, the AI/AN Patients Relations Coordinator, and Valerie Monteros, the ITRD Outreach Coordinator, recently organized outreach activities. At the 2nd Cross-Pacific Indigenous Exchange held at CSUMB on April 8th, they hosted an outreach table where they distributed complimentary PPE.

Furthermore, they represented IHC at the inaugural grantee meeting in Oklahoma, held at the First Americans Museum in Oklahoma City on April 16th and 17th. This event marked a significant milestone in our journey, as it was a crucial collaboration with the Center for Indigenous Innovation and Health Equity (CIIHE) and the Indigenous Foodways and Health (IFH). Discussions led by Dr. Valarie Blue Bird Jernigan, Director of CIIHE, revolved around program planning, evaluation efforts, and the vital aspect of food sovereignty within Indigenous communities, instilling a sense of hope and optimism for the future.

Additionally, the team joined Teresa Yolotl Gomez in Sacramento for the 2nd annual MMIP Candlelight Vigil on May 1st, participating in raising awareness and honoring Missing and Murdered Indigenous People.

Ways to Take Care of Your Wellness
When thinking about how we can show up for ourselves, it’s helpful to refer to the eight dimensions of wellness (physical, emotional, spiritual, social, environmental, intellectual, occupational, and financial). The dimensions of wellness is a framework for understanding and improving a person’s health and quality of life. Understanding it can also help us identify areas needing more attention and create a personal growth and development plan.
