Empowering our Community: IHC Takes Action Against Substance Abuse
February 29th, 2024
|
|
On Thursday, February 29th, IHC staff, community members, and partners gathered in a shared mission: combating substance abuse within our local community. The evening commenced with a Naloxone and Harm Reduction training led by Tessa Reynolds, a valuable Santa Clara County Behavioral Health Services Department partner. Participants engaged in an informative session, equipping themselves with the knowledge and tools necessary to administer Narcan—an essential intervention for preventing overdose fatalities.
Next, Katie Yellow Horse-Ruiz introduced the SAPTA grant awarded to IHC by the Indian Health Service. Through SAPTA, IHC is working to decrease substance abuse in Santa Clara County by providing screenings, rapid referrals, increased linkages to treatment, and culturally appropriate care. Following the overview of SAPTA, Tiffany Smith from Care Consulting delivered pertinent local statistics, providing a deeper understanding of the challenges facing community.
The event concluded with breakout discussion groups, where attendees actively brainstormed strategies to reach the objectives of the SAPTA grant. Notably, our Native youth contributed invaluable insights, reflecting their commitment as change-makers in the community. The event was a success and a testament to the power of community collaboration. At IHC, we are committed to helping ensure the survival and healing of American Indians, Alaskan Natives, and the greater community.

On Friday, March 1, over 40 community members gathered to participate in a presentation on Navajo Peacemaking and Navajo Code-Talkers, facilitated by Dine (Navajo) Elder Larry Foster. Mr. Foster was born and raised in Fort Defiance, AZ., to Harold and Margaret Foster. He graduated from UCLA with a BA in Sociology and worked for the Navajo Department of Health for 38 years.
Larry was an avid athlete and was inducted into the Southwest All-Indian Sports Hall of Fame in 2008, the Navajo Nation Sports Hall of Fame in 2016, and in January 2024, he was inducted into the North American Indigenous Athletes Hall of Fame, for Baseball. He is actively involved in promoting American Indian Freedom of Religion. He is a staunch advocate of the Apache Stronghold, a coalition of Apache and other Native and non-Natives organized to stop the mining and destruction of Oak Flats. Larry spoke of his father's experience while serving as a Navajo Code-Talker during WWII and the incredible impact the code-talkers had on the outcome of the war.

|
IHC was a proud sponsor of the 26th Annual Mexica New Year Ceremony, held from March 15th to 17th, hosted by Calpulli Tonalehqueh in collaboration with the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe of the San Francisco Bay Area.
Friday's 'Cali-Native Night' showcased the rich culture of several indigenous tribes to this region, now known as California. Saturday and Sunday featured a sunrise ceremony, Aztec Dance ceremonies, and cultural presentations by nations from throughout the "Americas," including Apache Crown Dancers, Pow Wow Exhibition, Voladores de Tajin, Quechua traditions of Bolivia and Peru, along with music artists and over 130 vendors.
It was a weekend of celebration, connection, and honoring ancient traditions that still resonate deeply within our community.
