This month, we were honored to connect with Michael Andrews (he/him), a proud member of the Pyramid Lake Paiute, Kickapoo, Sac & Fox, and Ojibwe tribes. Michael works is the IHC Counseling Prevention Services Supervisor. During our insightful discussion, Michael shared details about the Native Youth Workforce Development Program open to self-identifying native youth, ages 1-17. This program provides youth with skills such as interview techniques, professional attire, resume building, and workplace etiquette. Participants receive a stipend and exposure to various career paths. Specifically tailored for native youth, it also serves as a mentorship program as they transition into the professional world.

"' Youth who participate in our Youth Workforce Development Program not only receive a stipend upon joining but also emerge from the program with increased confidence for interviews and a greater ease in responding to potential employers' questions.'"- Michael Andrews.

My Vote, My Health | Mi Voto, Mi Salud
February 29th, 2024
On February 29th, local leaders and health advocates united to announce a year-long, statewide initiative, targeting six counties, to address historically low voter turnout, in advance of the the March 5th primary election. The local partners include Indian Health Center of Santa Clara Valley, Gardner Health Services, Community Health Partnership and Working Partnerships USA.

As part of the My Vote, My Health™ initiative, they emphasized the crucial link between health care and voting. With only 33.34% of registered voters in Santa Clara County participating in the June 2022 primaries, disparities in civic engagement were evident. Latinos and young adults showed particularly low turnout rates.

Speakers, like Cindy Chavez, Supervisor of Santa Clara County's District 2 and our very own, Aundrea Contreras, Clinical Services Director at the Indian Health Center of Santa Clara Valley, brought their expertise to the forefront. They highlighted every vote's importance, stressing civic participation's impact on community health. Guadalupe Becerra, LVN, Clinic Manager at Gardner Health Services, shared insights from the frontline of healthcare delivery, emphasizing the tangible effects of policy decisions on patient well-being.

The event also featured representatives from advocacy groups such as Working Partnerships USA and the Community Health Partnership. Lucila Ortiz and Maria Noel Fernandez, along with Patricia Diaz, underscored the need for collaborative efforts to overcome barriers to voter engagement.

As evidenced by the data, Latinos and young adults were notably underrepresented in the electoral process. Through our efforts to empower community participation, our goal is to foster a democracy that is more inclusive and resilient. Your voice holds significance—make it count! Vote by March 5th, by mail or in person! Find your local voting center HERE.

Indian Health Service Visits IHC
February 7th, 2024
On Wednesday, February 7th,  Roselyn Tso, the Director of the Indian Health Service (IHS) and Navajo Nation member, visited the Indian Health Center of Santa Clara Valley! As part of her site visit, she had an in-depth meeting with our Chiefs and CEO, Sonya Tetnowski, to discuss the needs of American Indians and Alaskan Natives in our community. During her visit, Ms. Tso toured our central medical location on Meridian Avenue, where she could view our state-of-the-art medical center and dental department. She also gained insights into the rich history and cultural significance of the Indian Health Center.

We're honored to have hosted Ms. Tso and grateful for the opportunity to showcase our commitment to ensuring the healing and wellness of our community. Stay tuned for more updates on our journey toward providing high-quality, comprehensive health care and cultural services!

The need to control every situation can cause a lot of stress and anxiety for ourselves and our relationships with others. That’s why it’s important to identify elements that are in our control.
