This month, we had the opportunity to meet Angel C. Fabian (he/she/they) who, in ceremonial spaces, is known as Tlahuizpapalotl (Butterfly of Light), and is the current Executive Director of Bay Area American Two Spirits organization (BAAITS). They are a person in recovery, an immigrant, a curanderx, Two-Spirit/Queer, Ben'Zaa (Zapotecx)/Xicanx manager/administrator and cultural bearer. They shared their journey at BAAITS and the impact they have made as a non-profit organization. We had an enlightening conversation about the term "Two Spirit" and the upcoming BAAITS Powwow, which is scheduled for February 10th, 2024 at the Fort Mason Festival Pavilion, San Francisco, CA.

"To quote a TS elder, 'Being Two Spirit is not something you come out as; it's something you grow into. This comes with responsibility and the expectation to contribute to your community.'" - Angel - Tlahuiz

Gwen Steirer New Years Eve Powwow
December 31st, 2023
IHC hosted the Gwen Steirer New Year's Eve Powwow at Yerba Buena High School on December 31, 2023. The event, aimed at preserving and celebrating indigenous culture, was beautifully executed. Approximately 900 people attended the Powwow, which lasted from 1 PM to 8:30 PM. In honor of Gwen Steirer, one of the primary founders of the Powwow in the 1980s, the event was named after her.

Gwen
Steirer, of to the Tonawanda Seneca, Turtle Clan, from up-state New York, passed away in April of 2023. She left behind a loving husband, Lou Steirer, and their sons, Thomas, Louis, and Robert Steirer, Grandsons Alex and Orion and Great Grandson Dominic. Gwen retired as the head of the Indian Education Program in the Santa Clara Unified School District. She played a key role in initiating the American Indian High School Graduation Ceremony, the Homestead High School March Powwow, and the Fremont High School New Year's Powwow. Her efforts ensured a smooth transition of the Powwows to the American Indian Alliance (AIA). Gwen was a long-standing Board of Directors member of the AIA, contributing significantly to the organization's success.

IHC Community Round Dance Recap
January 2024
Our Community Round Dance is a ceremony originating from the Cree people. A ceremony that we adopted into our South Bay community to help folks honor and remember their loved ones who have passed on. Through the meaningful dances and songs, we are able to bring our ancestors together and keep their memory alive. Community events like this can help folks who struggle with grief find support and healing.

IHC Virtual Town Hall Recap
IHC hosted a Virtual Town Hall for established adult patients to learn about the current Covid-19 and Flu Vaccines. We had a panel of Doctors to answer the hard-hitting questions, such as Dr. Elizabeth McCraven, MD, IHC Chief Medical Officer, and Dr. Gabriel Goldfien, MD, IHC Physician. Gerardo Loera, IHC Director of Communications, emceed the event and welcomed folks to participate. There was also a raffle at the end of the presentation where five lucky participants won $100.00 gift cards. The event was a success, with interactive participants and an informative session about the facts and importance of Covid-19 and Flu Vaccines.

KLAS Survey Update
In partnership with Aliados Health, IHCSCV is initiating an OChin Epic EMR performance survey under the HRSA HCCN grant. The survey, running from 01/31/2024 to 02/14/2024, aims to evaluate EMR functionality to provide comprehensive feedback to Ochin Epic in crucial areas like ease of use, enhancing patient safety, delivering higher quality care, and reducing unnecessary costs of care delivery. Collaborating with the Arch Collaborative from KLAS Research, IHCSCV will compile, analyze, and supply data to each participating health center and Ochin Epic. The survey, targeting clinical staff from Medical, Dental, and Behavioral health Departments, consists of 35 questions and should take approximately 12-15 minutes to complete. We encourage participation from staff in these departments to share their personal EMR experiences candidly.

Risk of Marijuana Use
Discussing the risks of marijuana use is important for prevention and awareness to inform individuals about potential health and social impacts, helping them make informed decisions. However, it’s important to also keep in mind marijuana affects everyone differently so many people will not experience the same impacts.
