Culture is Medicine Edition

Check out our latest episodes!
This month we got to Meet IHC's new Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Elizabeth McCraven! She shared about her path at IHC and we had a great Q&A session about being a doctor, dispelling myths and the importance of a health care professional's reason for working in medicine. "Knowing your why is one of the most important things as a Doctor, because in this work the burn out rate is high. If you know your ‘why’, then sticking through the hard times is easier because you understand your purpose." - Dr. McCraven

We also got to speak with Jose Morales, a Mexica Dancer and aspiring Nurse. As he shares his experience of being a Mexica Dancer with Calpulli Tonalehqueh, a San Jose Bay Area cultural dance collective. He also shared the impact Mexica New Year has on him each year and how it helps him feel closer to his ancestral roots. “’Culture is medicine’ to me is a reminder on how I’m carrying my ancestors' hopes and wishes on my shoulders as a form of guidance and power.” - Jose Morales

Winter Celebrations
December 2023
IHC hosted two events in community celebrating Winter Holidays. IHC and the American Indian Alliance hosted a Christmas Party on December 16th, 2023 at the I.E.S. Portuguese Hall of San Jose. It was a great event with a Talent Show, Dinner and Gifts with Santa. The turn out was amazing, as there were 450 people in attendance and 300 gifts were given out to the children.

IHC's Inter Tribal Resource Department also hosted the annual Winter Gathering on December 20, 2023, at the Roosevelt Community Center. This event was full of fun activities, including Coloring and Clean Joke Contests, promoting an atmosphere of happiness and unity. The 175 people in attendance had the opportunity to capture moments with Santa and about 80 children receive gifts, making this gathering a memorable experience for everyone.

ITRD - Turkey & Ham giveaway
December 21st, 2023
Our annual Turkey Giveaway happened on December 21st, 2023. The giveaway included not just turkeys but a variety of festive foods like ham. With the collective efforts of Vernon Medicine-cloud, Mahon Walsh and Valerie Monteros, a bounty of turkeys and hams were set aside and then distributed to the IHC community. A round of applause goes to IHC staff Tommy Lam, Leah Hodge and Gibran Lucatero, who played a key role in helping the ITRD distribute these essential food items to IHC community members and patients in need.

Remember, understanding mental health is prevention.
