October is Diabetes Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness of the high rates of Type 2 diabetes in the American Indian and Alaskan Native communities. With lifestyle and diet playing key roles, managing diabetes can feel challenging—but with the right support, it’s possible to live a healthy life.
Here are a few tips for managing diabetes:
- Stay Active: Regular physical activity, like walking or dancing, helps lower blood sugar levels and improve overall health.
- Eat Traditional Foods: Incorporate more whole, traditional foods such as beans, corn, and squash, and limit processed foods high in sugar.
- Monitor Blood Sugar: Keep track of your levels to better understand how your body responds to different activities and foods.
At IHC, our Registered Dietitians are available to help established patients create personalized nutrition plans. They offer guidance on healthy eating habits, cultural food practices, and diabetes management tailored to your needs.

Orange Shirt Day
September 30th, 2024
|
|
September 30th is Every Child Matters Day, also known as Orange Shirt Day, a time to acknowledge the lasting impact of the residential school system on Indigenous children and families. This day reminds us of the resilience of survivors and the importance of saying, "Every Child Matters."
Indian boarding schools, also known as residential schools, were government-funded and church-run institutions established in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Their purpose was to assimilate Indigenous children by forcibly removing them from their families, language, and culture. Many children faced harsh conditions, physical and emotional abuse, and neglect. This system has left a lasting impact on generations of Indigenous communities.
Today, IHC staff joined together to honor the strength of boarding school survivors and remember those we lost by wearing orange. Let’s continue to listen, learn, and advocate for healing and justice in our communities.
