CEO Message
MMIW+ Awareness
As a mother, grandmother, CEO, advocate, and trailblazer in the movement toward justice for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women-Plus (MMIW+), the time is NOW that we amplify the voices of victims and their families. I am honored to be named to the Not Invisible Commission by Deb Haaland and Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco of the Biden Administration. During my near 9-year tenure at IHC, I have dedicated myself to serving my community both locally and nationally.
MMIW+ National Day of Awareness is May 5th. IHC has created a community calendar of events aimed at elevating awareness, taking place in the Southern Ohlone Territory (South SF Bay).
To learn more about how you can be an ally, check out our IHC Education Toolkit (Social Media), MMIW+ Resource Document, and follow us for updates.

San Jose Sharks Native American Heritage Night
On Thursday, March 30th, we joined IHC community and families for Native American Heritage Night with the San Jose Sharks!
We started the evening with a beautiful land acknowledgment from the Muwekma Ohlone tribe.. The land acknowledgment stood as a strong reminder to honor those whose land we stand on. Former SJ Sharks right winger, Jonathan Cheechoo (Cree First Nations), made a special appearance to greet and sign autographs. Opportunities for youth to meet their role models can inspire them to become leaders in their community.
We ended the night with a Sharks 4-3 win against the Golden Knights. With such an exciting win, fans celebrated with free tacos!!
A portion of each ticket benefited our San Jose Native Youth Empowerment Group. Contact jduran@ihcscv.org for more information on how your youth can get involved!

Youth Workforce Development Highlight
Shout out to our Youth Workforce Development (YWFD) Spring 2023 graduates who spent part of their spring break learning new skills to build success. Despite the long days, they continued to bring strong, positive energy that filled the room with light! Their dedication to their futures ensures a bright future for the next generation of leaders.
On April 12th and 13th, Counseling Prevention Services hosted its annual YWFD Camp! The program included workshops on topics such as resume building, financial literacy, introduction to college, and entrepreneurship. Along with growing their professional skills, the youth participated in activities that promoted the care of self and community. During the Generosity Workshop, the youth learned the importance of giving back to others by creating unique handmade gifts for each other. Then, the Interdependence Workshop focused on applying teamwork in the workplace.
Programs that empower and provide youth with resources, skills, and strategies for the workforce and personal growth help them successfully navigate their career paths while finding a work-life balance.
We hope these opportunities will increase American Indian and Alaska Native representation in the workforce and higher education.
For similar programming for Native youth, try checking out our monthly Native Youth Empowerment Group! For more information, email jduran@ihcscv.org.
