MMIW+ Awareness Week, May 1 to May 5, 2023
|
|
CEO Message
Context: MMIP stands for Missing and Murdered Indigenous People. MMIW+ stands for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women-Plus. Both acronyms are part of the movement that advocates for the end of violence against Native peoples across the Americas.
MMIP Event in California
Dear Advocates,
We are excited to share with you that the Not Invisible Act Commission (NIAC) is coming to Northern California. Co-hosted by the Yurok Tribe, this two-day hearing is scheduled for the Blue Lake Rancheria from June 13-14, 2023.
The goal of the hearing is to have 2 days of testimony about MMIP directly from survivors and families. We have created a flyer you can share with the families in your communities and Tribes who have been impacted by MMIP. Their voices are so important for the Commissioners to hear. This will be on the only NIAC hearing on the West Coast.
In addition to the hearing, the Yurok Tribe will host a Cultural Sharing and Traditional Dinner on Monday, June 12th at 4-8pm at Sue-Meg State Park in Trinidad, CA. All are welcome to attend. To RSVP, please email MMIP@yuroktribe.nsn.us with your name and the names of anyone else in your party who will be attending.
Please see here for a press release and more information about the hearings.

MMIW+ Awareness Week 2023
A red hand over the mouth has become the symbol of a growing movement. It stands for all the missing relatives whose voices are not heard. It stands for the silence of the media and law enforcement in the midst of this crisis. It stands for the oppression and subjugation of Native women who are now rising up to say #NoMoreStolenSisters.
As a mother, grandmother, CEO, advocate, and trailblazer in the movement toward justice for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women-Plus (MMIW+), the time is NOW that we amplify the voices of victims and their families. I am honored to be named to the Not Invisible Commission by Deb Haaland and Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco of the Biden Administration. During my near 9-year tenure at IHC, I have dedicated myself to serving my community both locally and nationally.
MMIW+ National Day of Awareness was May 5th. This year, IHC partnered with many of our allies in community to amplify the voices of the victims, families, and survivors. Together, we hosted a plethora of programs throughout Muwekma Ohlone territory (Santa Clara County). Although May 5th may have passed, the fight is not over. We need your support!
To learn more about how you can support the movement for justice, check out our webpage here.

Migraine and Headache Awareness Month
|
|
June is National Migraine and Headache Awareness Month, a time to learn more about frequently disabling neurological conditions that include migraine, cluster headache, spinal CSF leak, and post-traumatic headache. Migraine and severe headache disorders effect American Indians and Alaska Natives at a higher rate than other racial groups while, at the same time, access to neurologists and headache specialists is significantly more limited for Indian Health Services patients. Improper treatment of migraine and severe headache can lead symptoms to increase unnecessarily over time in type, severity, and frequency. For this reason, it is important to educate yourself, seek medical care, and get support if you suspect you have one of these conditions that, ironically, don’t always present with head pain as a symptom.
Help raise awareness about migraine and headache disorders by participating in Miles for Migraine and the Alliance for Headache Disorders Advocacy’s free Headache on the Hill Walk, Run or Relax Event. All funds raised will help volunteers advocate for equitable federal policies for those with headache disorders. Join Team California and complete your walk, your run, or your own relaxation-based activity between June 23rd - June 30th at a time and place that works for your schedule. Register today!
For more information about migraine and headache disorders please visit the American Migraine Foundation and Miles for Migraine.

What We Can And Can't Control
The need to control every situation can cause a lot of stress and anxiety for ourselves and our relationships with others.
That’s why it’s important to identify elements that are in our control. By letting go of what is not serving us, we can move on from constant cycles of stress. Taking care of your health and well-being is the best thing you can do for yourself.

Healing Generational Trauma Message
As Indigenous people, it is important we break cycles of trauma that have been passed down in our families. This can lead to improved mental health, stronger family and community relationships, and a greater sense of cultural pride and identity. Addressing generational trauma is a crucial step towards achieving justice and reconciliation for historical injustices and systemic oppression that Native Americans have experienced.
To learn more about our IHC Counseling Prevention Services, call 408-960-0643. If you or someone you know needs immediate assistance, please call or text the 24/7 toll-free and confidential Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 9-8-8.
