Welcome to the IDPC Alert and Happy New Year! Human Rights Day (10 December) served as a good reminder of our movement’s achievements and challenges in promoting human rights-based drug policies. IDPC was delighted to co-organise an event where government, civil society and UN representatives took stock of the latest developments in ensuring greater coherence between these spheres. By contrast, on the very same day the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) blocked the scheduled presentation of a report by the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention detailing human rights abuses in the name of drug control. IDPC urged the CND to ensure the Working Group is invited again at the upcoming 65th session of the CND, next March. If you are interested in planning a side event at the CND, please note that the period to submit an application will end on 21 January.
