2021 IAU Annual Report now available

The IAU 2021 Annual Report provides an overview of our activities and other initiatives developed in 2020-2021, together with relevant facts and figures. In addition, the report details our accomplishments during the 70 years celebrations of IAU as the voice of higher education. The year also brought challenges with the ongoing pandemic and possibilities for IAU to adapt, change and grow our global presence.

This Annual Report illustrates the quality services and opportunities to engage with the global higher education community IAU Members receive under the four pillars of Leadership, Internationalisation, Sustainable Development, and Digital Transformation.

You will find details on all our actions, which we continue to build, and in which your voice and participation are welcome. Enjoy your reading!

Call for papers: Reinventing Higher Education?


The In Focus section of the upcoming issue of IAU Horizons is devoted to the third World Higher Education Conference (WHEC2022) under the overarching theme: Reinventing Higher Education for a Sustainable Future.

The Global Role of University Associations


During this webinar on 18 January at 13 - 14:30 UTC, leaders of different university associations will discuss the role of higher education associations in the current context and what future roles these associations will play. They will reflect on the local and global role of university associations, how they collaborate and complement each other, or at times compete, and how they influence higher education and society.

This joint session organised by IAU and the American Council on Education (ACE) forms part of the IAU series of debates on The Future of Higher Education with outcomes contributing to the UNESCO World Higher Education Conference (WHEC) in May 2022.

International Green Gown Awards 2022


In a Masterclass Webinar on 1 February at 13:00 - 14:15 UTC, speakers will explain how to apply for the 2022 International Green Gown Awards. You will also hear from some of the 2021 Winners and Highly Commended on how winning an International Green Gown Award has impacted their institution, staff and students.

Connecting Higher Education & the Green Economy


During this interactive webinar on 15 February at 13:00 - 14:30 UTC, you will build your understanding of how higher education, both universities and technical institutions, can better connect with employers for curricular updates, internships and placements. Moreover, you will find this event useful for strategic planning and collaborative efforts.

The webinar makes use of the newly launched Global Guidance for Education on Green Jobs, a document that provides insights and empowerment for effective actions, a collection of key resources, and an opportunity to join an international community of practice.

70 years of IAU and international cooperation


IAU feted on 9 December 2021 in a final session 70 years of IAU and international cooperation. The discussion focused on how the IAU's initial seventy years helped shape the HE agenda for the future and looked into the future. An expert panel from the higher education community shared personal and institutional accounts of the internationalisation dynamic and value-driven interventions and their impact on good governance in higher education.

GOAF 2022

IAU Partner Organization, GOAF's first Bi-Annual Conference on 20 - 21 January, will launch the Global Observatory on Academic Freedom. The conference will present the findings of the GOAF Annual Report 2020-2021 and liaise with the academic community – researchers in the field, relevant policymakers and students. The conference will also be an opportunity to present the global developments in academic freedom and provide a platform to debate the most pertinent issues in 2020/2021. 

ASEMME8 in Bangkok

On 13-15 December 2021, IAU participated in the 8th Asia Europe Education Ministers Meeting (ASEMME8) under the theme ASEM Education 2030: Towards more resilient, prosperous and sustainable futures and the preparatory 2nd Senior Officials Meeting (SOM2). Both events were hosted virtually by the Government of Thailand.

On this occasion, the ASEAN University Network (AUN), the European University Association (EUA) and the IAU released a joint statement reiterating their commitment towards the ASEM Education Process and called for its continuation and enhancement.

The conversation continued during a private tour and dinner at the Palace of Versailles, a memorable ending to the successful Rectors' meeting.

UArctic Rectors' meeting

 

Rectors representing the Universities member of  UArctic and IAU met in Versailles at Université de Versailles Saint Quentin en Yvelines (UVSQ) on 6 December. The day offered valuable exchange and debate on major higher education challenges in the Arctic. Attendees heard speakers from UArctic and IAU member universities, the French government, the EU Commission, and IAU. Hilligje van 't Land, IAU Secretary-General, moderated a panel on the internationalisation of studies from an Arctic context and the creation of joint degree programs.  

 
Additional topics included the scientific strategy on the Arctic and academic cooperation on climate change, resources, maritime routes, and protection of indigenous populations. It was also the occasion to develop the roadmap for the Arctic Science Ministerial Conference (ASM4) in 2023  in France and was co-organised by Russia and France.

International Day of Education

On 24 January, IAU will celebrate the fourth International Day of Education with UNESCO under the theme ‘Changing Course, Transforming Education’. We invite you to join us in celebrating this day: please tag our Twitter @IAU_AIU and LinkedIn accounts to share your initiatives using the official UNESCO hashtag #EducationDay.

WAHED: be a part of the largest Global Access Survey

This survey looks to capture the views of the international equity community regarding the potential for cross country collaboration and exchange of knowledge to address the challenges related to inequalities in access/success. It forms part of the WAHED Equitable access and success in higher education across the world: the road to 2030 research project, which will be completed in early 2022.

The deadline for completion is January 24 2022

International Green Gown Awards 2022link

Applications for nominations will open in January. Visit International Green Gown Awards 2022 for the latest details. These awards celebrate the exceptional sustainability initiatives currently undertaken by universities and colleges worldwide and are endorsed by UN Environment and supported by: The Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), L’Agence universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF), The Higher Education Sustainability Initiative (HESI) and the IAU.  

A webinar (see above] on February 1, will explain eligibility and how you can apply.

 

UNESCO ICT in Education Prize

The 2021 call for nominations is open for the UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize for the use of ICT in education. Every year, the Prize has a specific theme, which, while being in line with UNESCO’s mandate and values, advocates for responsible and ethical use of information and communication technologies. This year’s theme is: The use of technology to enable inclusive crisis-resilient learning systems.

The deadline for online nominations in English or French is 18 February 2022.

This new edition of the handbook addresses the myriad changes across all aspects of international education. Each chapter presents the situation in which they were written and offers insights for the future. It includes several updated chapters from the first edition and new chapters from contributors representing wider and more diverse backgrounds.

Observatory Digest - December 2021

 
IAU is a founding institutional member of the Observatory for Higher Education Transformations, an initiative of the Institute of Education, HSE University, Moscow, Russia, which joined forces with seven other renowned research centres on higher education worldwide.
The mission of the Observatory for Higher Education Transformations is to provide an empowering space for scholars interested and engaged in the sphere of higher education to collaborate and to follow and reflect on the transformation of the research and practice in higher education worldwide. 
 

Release of Free to Think Report

 
Scholars at Risk hosted a 'Free to Think 2021' virtual symposium on December 9, 2021, to mark the release of the seventh report by SAR’s Academic Freedom Monitoring Project, which traces attacks on higher education communities worldwide.

The report analyses 332 attacks on higher education communities in 65 countries and territories between September 1, 2020, and August 31, 2021.
