Today marks the eleventh installment of a series of articles by HumanProgress.org named, The Heroes of Progress

This bi-weekly column gives a short overview of unsung heroes of progress who have made an extraordinary contribution to the well-being of humanity. The Hero could be anyone from a scientist who invented a vaccine that saved millions of people, to a politician whose policies lifted a nation from poverty to prosperity.

Our thirteenth installment features James Watt, an 18th century Scottish engineer and inventor, who greatly enhanced the efficiency of the steam engine. Watt’s design made power more affordable and reliable than ever before, and his engine was fundamental in kick-starting the Industrial Revolution.

I hope that you will join us in our celebration of The Heroes of Progress.

Warm regards,
Marian L. Tupy
