Dear wolf advocate:
Lawmakers in Washington, D.C. are poised to add irresponsible policy provisions (known as “riders”) to budget bills that arbitrarily remove the wolf from the Endangered Species List. If passed and the wolf is delisted, states WILL PROCEED with wolf trophy hunting.
And even worse, these riders prohibit judicial review of this rule. This means that courts are barred from relisting the wolf. The wolf will go to the back of the line for any federal protections. By that time, they will be gone.
If this “no judicial review” rider passes, it is a dangerous precedent to allow Congress to choose which animals get to exist and which laws can be legally challenged.
Your help is needed today on two actions:
- Please email your U.S. Senators and Congressman here: http://www.howlingforwolves.org/node/526?vvsrc=%2fcampaigns%2f40528%2frespond. Our easy website has a pre-written and editable letter that easily identifies who represents you in Washington, D.C. and sends with one click.
- The staff of the appropriations committee run the show. Please email the following staff today with the DIRECTIONS BELOW to let them know the breath of support for the wolf from across the country. Let them know science – not politics – should guide the recovery of the wolf. You can send one email by putting the addresses in the BCC part and email to yourself.

On behalf of Howling For Wolves, the gray wolf, and Endangered Species Act supporters, I’m writing to urge the Appropriations Committee to oppose any attempts to attach anti-Endangered Species Act riders to the omnibus appropriations bill. I am focused specifically on the dire possibility of a politically motivated rider that delists the gray wolf. I know the gray wolf is important to the natural environment of North America and they were nearly exterminated by the same forces that want this rider pushed through Congress.
- Include the text below (and feel free to edit or write your own) about why the wolf is important and how removing them from the Endangered Species List is wrong! Don’t forget to include your full name and address on the bottom.
Delisting by Congress will go against the purpose of the Endangered Species Act itself which is to use scientific consensus and not politics to protect species. This rider will remove federal protections and accelerate the extinction of this critical and magnificent social species. The rider contains a provision prohibiting this rule from judicial review.
This rider is a power grab by Congress over the courts. The courts will be blocked from restoring federal protections. For any needed protection, the wolf will go to the “back of the line” for any consideration. But with the irrational hatred of the wolf and the trophy hunts, they will be gone before then. This "no judicial review rider" sets a dangerous precedent allowing Congress to choose which animals get to exist and which laws can be reviewed by the courts: dangerous indeed.
With great respect, I am urging the committee to remain strong in protecting the gray wolf and the Endangered Species Act. It’s important to the environment, our country, and to me.
