Firefighters arrived on scene to find fire and heavy black smoke coming from the bay doors of the building and explosions were heard from inside the building. Due to the explosions and a reported partial collapse of the end of the structure, a defensive mode was ordered.
HFD Hazmat was requested to evaluate the runoff of used motor oil from the building and assisted with containment to keep if from flowing into an open drainage ditch.
It was determined the building was too dangerous to enter for overhaul and firefighters used a backhoe to assist with final extinguishment of the fire. An inspector was on scene to see what needed to be done as far as code enforcement for the approximate 200 gallons of spilled used motor oil.
Approximately a dozen firefighters had to exchange their gear due to contamination. Crews from Stations 15, 34, 4, 13, 31, 58, 67, 30 and Hazmat responded to this incident.
