ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
For nearly 2 decades, the second graders at The Shlenker School have held read-a-thons to raise money and purchase NEW stuffed animals from Build-A-Bear Workshop.  This year, the children purchased 93 bears and have raised enough money to make a donation to Medilife of Houston (501c3) to help purchase equipment or assist with training for Houston firefighters.

The NEW bears are given to children by EMTs or paramedics during emergency calls in order to reassure children involved in an emergency that HFD is there to help. Each bear comes with a special prayer inside to help comfort the child.  HFD only accepts NEW bears because the pedi patients they care for may be very sick and have compromised immune systems.

An HFD fire truck will visit the school and receive the bears.  Firefighters will thank the students for their special gifts.  This is a mitzvah, or an act of kindness, that these second graders are doing to help children they will likely never meet.
