Last February, Mr. Michael Deaton was getting ready for bed when he suddenly became nauseous and complained of chest pain to his wife. He took nitroglycerin -- but the pain did not subside. He knew this was serious and called 9-1-1 himself -- the first link in the Chain of Survival.
HFD paramedics from Medic 70 arrived and assessed Mr. Deaton. While they were preparing to transport him, he collapsed on the bed without a pulse. He was moved to the floor and CPR was started along with defibrillation. HFD Engine 70 and Supervisor 36 arrived and gave more advanced care. Fortunately, Mr. Deaton regained a pulse before being transported to a local hospital.
Mr. Deaton is a proud retiree from NASA after 31 years of service. Mike and his wife Linda have been married for 31 years and have 9 great-grandchildren. The Deaton’s will meet Dr. David Persse, the HFD EMS Director as well as HFD paramedics, EMTs, and the 9-1-1 calltaker to thank them for saving his life and providing key links in the Chain of Survival!
The 5 links in the adult Chain of Survival are:
1. Immediate recognition of cardiac arrest and activation of the emergency response system
2. Early cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) with an emphasis on chest compressions
3. Rapid defibrillation
4. Effective advanced life support
5. Integrated post-cardiac arrest
