In February of this year, Kenyan Bernard was enjoying a few treats at school, not knowing they contained something he has a severe allergy to. Within minutes, he began having trouble breathing. One of his teachers found him out of breath in the hallway and helped him to get to the school nurse. The nurse administered an Epi-PenⓇ while another staff member called 9-1-1. His mother, Mrs. Keonsha Bernard, a school counselor at Westbrook was advised of his condition.
HFD EMTs and paramedics from station 94D arrived and administered treatment. Kenyan’s breathing improved and he was transported to a local hospital.
Upon his arrival in the hospital’s emergency department, his mother’s worst nightmare happened – he went into cardiac arrest! Kenyan was resuscitated but had serious complications. After 11 days of hospitalization, his condition improved and just a few weeks later, he fully recovered and returned to school!
Kenyan and his family will celebrate his 13th birthday in a few days! He and his mother, Mrs. Bernard will thank Westbrook Intermediate personnel and the Houston Fire Department EMTs and paramedics who provided key links in saving his life!
Dr. David Persse, HFD EMS Physician Director will recognize everyone for taking quick action which made it possible for Kenyan to survive this life-threatening allergic reaction!
The 5 links in the adult Chain of Survival are:
1. Immediate recognition of cardiac arrest and activation of the emergency response system
2. Early cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) with an emphasis on chest compressions
3. Rapid defibrillation
4. Effective advanced life support
5. Integrated post-cardiac arrest
